menupause

I have had pain in my legs over the past two years.  First it started in one knee, then after 6 months moved to the other.  Next it moved to one ankle and then after a further 6 months to the other ankle.  Now it is my foot and toes.  Is there anything I can do for this.  I cannot walk or exercise so therefore I have put on alot of weight.  Please help. My Doctor says it will eventually go but he can't say when.

Hello Jacq,

Hello and Welcome to MedHelp's Pain Management Forum. I am glad that you found us and took the time to post. We can relate to Chronic Pain (CP) and the problems it presents in our lives.

I think it is interesting that your heading or title is Menopause. Do you think your symptoms are associated with menopause?

Mellie has asked my usual questions, such as what makes you pain better or what makes it worse? What diagnostic tests have you had and what were the results? Why does your physician feel this will "go away?" Have you consulted specialist?

I was going to ask if your physician thought your symptoms may be associate with  PAD (Peripheral Vascular Disease). However if it was it would not be "going away" in time. So I am wondering what diagnosis your physician has given you.

Regardless of your diagnosis you deserve to be more comfortable. In my opinion no one should just accept uncontrolled chronic pain (CP) as a way of life. Extreme CP doesn't have to be your life and it shouldn't be acceptable. You don't really say how much pain you have so excuse me for assuming it's more then just a nuisance.

As I don't know the type of pain or reason behind it all I can do is encourage you to discuss treatment options with your physician. If he/she is not willing to treat your pain then you may want a second opinion.... or as suggested when Mellie said chronic pain doctor I'm think she meant to say consult a PMP (Pain Management Physician). They are the experts in managing CP.

I hope you'll feel comfortable adding a bit more information. I'll look forward to hearing from you soon. I wish you the very best.

Take Care,
~Tuck

You're Welcome.

If your PCP has not put a "name" on your condition he probably doesn't have a diagnosis. It sounds more like he is hoping this is a passing problem and will go away on it's own. Be assertive and request answers.

If your PCP is not interested in investigating your symptoms it may be time to search for a new one.... or at least obtain a second opinion.

Personally I don't think your symptoms are menopause related. It's a possiblity but a smal one in my opinion.

Please be aware that there are all kinds of "stoamch" medications. I've tried several and like you they weren't very effective. However I and my physician did find one that eased my GERD and stomach distress. So I encourage you to keep looking. Consult your Pharmacist as he/she has a lot of knowledge in medications, the true experts and best of all it's free.

I also encourage you to take the medications that your PCP prescribed. It may help but if not then you can return and say you've done verything he's suggested and you still have pain. Physician's don't appreciate non-compliant patients, and sadly that's what you'll be labeled if you don't follow his instructions. None of us what that label.

Life is simply too short to live it in pain or to be so uncomfortable. I wish you less pain but the only way you can reach that goal is to follow the advice of your PCP and go down that path to a diagnosis.

I'll look forward to your updates. Best of luck and please keep in touch. Excuse misspelling as my spell check is not working!..Sorry.

Take Care,
~Tuck

Hi Mellie & Tuck,

Thank you for reply to my e mail.  I have not been sent for tests.  The pain wakes me at night.  I limp all the time.  I was offered anti inflammatories and because these affect your stomach I was offered tablets to help with the stomach.  I had taken them previously and did not find them of any use, so I did not bother taking them this time.  My Doctor didn't know if they would be of any use anyway.  He did not put a name on the condition, just said it will probably go away in time! I thought it might have something to do with the menopause but maybe it doesn't.

Thank you for your help.  I really appreciate you replying to me.

Did your doctor mention what condition you may have?  Has he run any tests?  You may need to see a different doctor and get a different opinion.  How are you being treated?  Meds, tests, procedures?  Where exactly is the pain:  joints, muscles, etc.?  Does anything make it worse or better?  Are you seeing a chronic pain doctor?
