oxycodone and pregnant

Hi,
I hope someone can help put my mind at ease, this has been the hardest thing I have ever had to go through.

When I became pregnant I was on about 40 mg of oxycotin a day, the day I found out I cut down to about 5mg a day. I stayed on 5 mg a day or every other day until I was about 20 weeks pregnant and I hurt my back really bad. My dr put me back on about 15 mg a day and I have been on that dose the last 10 weeks. Now as my delivery date is approaching I am so terrified about the lasting effects of what I have done to my baby.
I am also terrified about not weaning off in time and having a baby addicted to the pain medicine.
The baby I am carrying is in perfect health from what they can tell, I also had a 4d ultrasound to make sure he wasn't deformed and he is very cute.
The main concern I am having is that he is going to be born with developmental problems or have to attend a special school.
I trusted my doctors to help me and they have assured me that the prescription is fine to take while pregnant.
I am hoping there is someone out there who has been through this and can tell me what their outcome was.
I am NOT abusing the prescription and have never taken more than the doctors have told me to.
I am due for an induction in 9 weeks, please help me to put my mind and conscience at ease. I have beaten myself up over this since I got pregnant, even though I was on such a low dose. Now I feel like I have dug a deeper hole by letting the doctors up my dose. I am supposed to be weaned off by 34 weeks, which I can do, I just want to know if my baby is going to have problems.
Thanks in advance

Thank u sooo much! I am so glad to hear that everything has worked out for you and the babies! Its hard being in pain! Also add pregnancy and weight gain on top of that! Ouch!
Well, I am 34 weeks today and I have been off the pain meds for a week and a half now! I took suboxone for 4 days and WOW! No withdraws! No putting myself through hell! I am totally off and it was the easiest thing I have ever done!
I am so proud of myself! I am also so happy that the baby will never have to suffer!
Lets just hope I make it to 36 weeks! I am dilated to 1cm!
Thanks again and God bless you!
Apparently your prayers have worked!

Hi Jamie...Don't worry!  My OB/GYN had me on a very strong narcotic for my whole pregnancy (both times), and everything was just fine.  My babies were a little more irritable and hungry, it seemed, but the doc assured me that the stress on my body from the pain was worse than the medicine for the baby.  And this didn't last long at all (the irritability)...maybe 3-4 days.  As long as you are honest with your docs about what you're taking, they will know how to deal with any issues the baby has after birth.  Mental or physical disabilities are not linked to narcotic pain meds during pregnancy (I'm talking about legal, prescribed, meds in the proper dosages).  At least, that's what I was assured of during my pregnancies.  The OB even had a long talk with me one day about how, when someone is pregnant, they tend to skip the NSAIDS and go straight to the narcotics, because they're less harmful for the baby.  Again, in my opinion, the baby may withdraw (which is heartbreaking), but only if you're still taking them around the time of birth.  If you are off of them by 34 weeks, you'll never notice a thing!  (JMHO)  :)  But, girl, let me add this...it's not good for you or the baby for you to be in pain.  The stress causes all kinds of problems (early labor, high blood pressure, etc...).  Talk with your doctor about the best option for you both.  I'm praying for you!

cannot believe your doctors would say that the meds. would not effect the baby. Everything a mom does while pregnant can effect the baby. If its any consolation the baby will probably be ok. Maybe he will cry more or something but lots of love and cuddling should make him feel safe and keep him under doctor's supervision. good luck.
