Thanx so much for your detailed answer!
You really explain it well.
Yes - I have a dental school nearby & suspected
they would be the best.
Really appreciate your help.

Aww thank you! I'm definitely not a dentist but I've had a ton of work done and just picked up a few things along the way. I will try to help as best as I can but please remember its just my opinion. :)
One of two things could be going on, infection or left over root. A tiny crack or superficial break is all it takes for bacteria to get in there and the bacteria (infection) will cause pain. Some teeth have extra roots (canals) or what's called an accessory canal which doesn't usually show up on an xray. If those extra canals are missed, meaning nerve tissue was not cleaned out, then months after a root canal you can start having pain. They would have to go back in and basically finish the root canal to get the rest of the root out that was left behind.
You can have pain from grinding but its a different type of pain. I grind while sleeping and have broke a ton of teeth that way! But the pain I get from grinding all night is a lot different from infection or root pain. A simple mouth guard would fix that if it was your problem.
Your situation could really be either one, I know not so helpful lol. You had a break so bacteria could be in there. Ive have broken teeth with infection that the pain would subside and come back as my body fought the infection. But since you had a root canal its also very likely that an accessory canal was missed (it happens a lot since they are hard to find) and that canal still needs a root canal done.
The suggestion of a new crown I find disturbing. I would really consider getting another opinion. If you have a college or dental school nearby you might consider going there. The students are supervised by a dentist and they are really thorough because they are learning. I have had my best work done by dental students and they are always cheaper than the local dentists.
I hope I've been somewhat helpful and I hope you feel better. Tooth pain is such b@#tch.
Good luck!

Saw your answer about tooth pain - I have
suffered from TMJ my whole life & had 2 back
teeth on bottom pulled in desperation.  Now the 3rd tooth
from the end gets very painful at times & that
one had a root canal.  I realize you said you are
not a dentist, but your answer was better than I
have ever gotten from dentists or endodentist.
Can a superficial break cause so much pain as well?
One dentist said I may need a new crown since the
upper teeth are exerting so much pressure on this
tooth ( I need to get an implant to replace the lost
teeth) - thanks for any input you may have.

Sounds like he left the root exposed or its infected. Those are the only 2 things that cause tooth pain. If its constant throbbing pain that doesn't stop then that would likely be infection. If its only hurting when you try to chew then it sounds like the root is exposed under the crown in which case he should have done a root canal. The latter is my opinion but I'm not a dentist. When your tooth breaks, especially if it had a previous filling, you almost always need a root canal before the crown. Only in small superficial breaks can a crown just be put on top. With having a filling before, they already drilled deep to fill it and when it broke it probably exposed the root.
Go back to your dentist asap or you could wind up with more damage.
