Bowel Movements.....6yr old

Hello~

I have a very picky 6 year old boy. How often should he be moving his bowels? He will go and then maybe skip 3 days and then maybe go 2 days in a row and then skip 1 day....not very consistent. Also, he sits there forever but dosen't seem to be straining.....my dr recommended mirolax but i don't feel comfortable with that......any advice....

Listen to your doctor, and read up on encopresis in the meantime.  (Benefiber is the stool softener of choice around our house.)  If your son's lower intestine or colon is distended and not working correctly, he could need this for a year to get everything back to normal function.  And the sooner the better, you don't want it to be a problem for him any longer than it has to.
