My baby is 6 days old and I'm feeding both formula ansia breast milk, she doesn't seen to get full with breast milk cuz she's always looking for something to suck. I'm afraid to over feed her. Is it ok to feed her both??? Is it ok to feed formula right after bmilk since she's still hungry???

Hi! Just wanted to add my two cents here! I'm a mom of three who breastfed each child, each having a lot of difficulty in the beginning! I could write a volume about what we went through but i wont! :) In short, initial visits to the lactation consultant helped tremendously. After one birth my milk supply was out of this world with abundance and another there was very little. The initial Colustrum is very important, (so remember your baby already had this even if  it seemed like nothing those drops count! :)and the milk may had not come in at the time you wrote. I waited for Five days! The myth "oh, that baby isn't getting enough to eat!" is simply not true. Breast really is best, for baby and even for mom, as Margypops wrote it's loaded with antibodoes, enzymes, etc.."liquid gold" that formula companies only dream of emulating. Furthermore, it's a bond that will last a lifetime! I went through so much so i know how you feel! The boppy, using a breast cup, nipple covers, contraptions, all kinds of crazy silicone things to get the babies to latch right...Stick with it, if you want to. Listen to your baby and your body and do whats best for your baby and your family. If you decide to stay with it you will cherish that time forever. I know i did..Your doing great and your NOT alone!! :) .Hope this helps! ...mamalarcon

I agree, it is fine to use both breast milk and formula..whatever works best for all of you.

As for baby getting enough to eat.  The thing to remember is that infants and small children do a really really great job of regulating what they need.  So I would allow your child to set the pace in terms of intake.  The best way to know for certain if she is eating enough is her weight gain.  If she is following her curve (ie born in 50th percentile and stays on the 50th or increases, then she is getting enough).  Your Dr. can help you determine if this is the case.  You will also find she eats more frequently or just more per feeding during a growth spurt.  It's generally not a great idea to keep feeding her after she has let you know she has had enough.  She will do this by just plain stopping.

As for sucking other times, almost all babies do this.  Sucking for babies is a means of self comfort, which is why lots of babies and young children use soothers and/or their thumbs.  So sucking does not necessarily mean hunger.

I know, it's so hard to know what the best thing is isn't it.  Your doing great!  Trust your instincts and if your concerned she isn't eating enough, talk to her Dr.  Weight gain is the best way to tell.  Another way is her output.  An infants diaper should be very wet and heavy after about 3 to 4 hours.

All the best to you!  We mommies do worry, but most of the time we are doing well.  And don't you worry even a little bit about supplementing with formula.  Whats important is that you are both happy!!  Take care.

Yes perfectly okay, however you should feed absolutely as much breastmilk as possible, using a pump if you have to, because there are many beneficial things in breastmilk that are not in formula. Breastmilk contains antibodies and other immune factors that pass on to the infant, and help keep him free of illness.  However if your natural supply is insufficient, that's all there is to it, better to suplement..Congratulations on the birth let us know how she is doping ..
