Slight weight loss in toddler

My 18 month old is only about 20lbs.  He was over this at 1 year of age, but lost a significant amount of weight during a very nasty virus that lasted over 3 months.  He was and is being monitored by his pediatrician.  My concern is this.  He was doing a great job of gaining, but he and I were travelling for 2 weeks.  We were in a part of the country where they are experiencing a serious heat wave (we are not at home).  He has dropped a bit of weight again.  Do you think this could be due to the heat?  His appetite was slightly off, but he still seemed to eat fairly well.  He hasn't seemed ill in any way with the exception of a very runny nose (mostly green, sometimes clear).  He has a Dr.'s appointment Tuesday morning, but am wondering if anyone else has experienced weight loss during extreme heat. Is it normal for very active toddlers to have weight flucuation, or is it more like infants where they gain steadily, just at a slower pace?  Thanks so much.

I think the heat was probably a big factor as well.  I think probably also partially the fact that the remainder of his eye teeth are still working their way through, and with all the traveling he was tired and just off a bit.  I really worry about the weight issue even though he seems healthy and normal.  Still very active, etc.  I will update as to what the Dr. says. Thanks.

I think it highly likely the weight loss is due to the heat, make sure he is getting plenty of fluids , pedialyte even ,its good to speak to your Doctor about it. Step up on the quantity of food make sure he is eating well. When we are dehydrated very often we don't want to drink, so fill that bottle or sippy cup all the time .good luck let us know what the Doctor says, a green runny nose may be a sign of some infection going on .
