Continue with the stool softeners as prescribed by your doctor until you get different medication and advice from your doctor.

Make sure that your son has fruit to eat, apples, oranges, grapes, melon, pineapple, plums as well as plenty of water.  Fruit juices are fine in moderation because they can damage the enamel on the teeth.

If he likes vegetables, encourage that.

Cut out or cut down on sweets, biscuits, cakes, fizzy drinks and sugary and processed foods.  If you use white bread change this to brown or buy the 50/50 bread that looks white but does contain wholemeal.

Rather than the sugary cereals, try him on porridge or RedyBrek with some soft fruit, a drizzle of honey or a little of chocolate spread on.

The other thing with children is that they tend to hold on and not go to use the toilet when they have an urge.  They don't want to miss anything.  Not going when he has an urge will constipate him.  I had my 7 year old grandson ask me what does it feel like when you need to have a poo.  So perhaps you need to explain to your son that when he has an urge, he must go.

Best of luck.

Talk to the pediatrician.  This is severe enough not to just do home remedies.  The doc might have a different suggestion entirely, like altering the overall diet of the child.  If the stool is 4 inches wide and 10 inches long, it's amazing the child is even willing to try to pass it.  I would not stop the stool softeners, though, while waiting to see the doctor.  Try gummy fiber supplements or Benefiber.  Miralax is not the only product in the world.
