New To the world of PCOS

So I just came back from my fertility specialist where she has told me that I have the classic signs (via trans vaginal ultrasound) and blood work and she has diagnosed me with PCOS. Can anybody give me an idea of what will happen with my treatment?

My testeosterone levels are up a little bit, but not out of control.  I do have the insulin resistance problems and that is probably my biggest thing.  I have had 1 cyst come and go but only on one side so I guess I am lucky.  I am a little overweight, but not extremely and I do not have any excess hair on my body.  I get my periods normal every month, but have longer cycles than "normal" people.  Everyone is different but we're all in this together!

Actually my testosterone and insulin were both normal, I am also normal weight and don't have abnormal hair.  my only symptoms of pcos is the cysts in my ovaries and no period.  The weird thing is i also have gastroparesis (my stomach doesn't fully contact) which is caused by insulin resistance.  I knew about that three yrears before i found out about the pcos.  The only reason i don't question the diagnosis is because the metformin has shrank a lot of my cysts ( i had over 86).

Thanks I am in the military and all of my scripts for this wasn't paid for but I will definitely try amazon.com so thank you so much for the advice. I will remember to get the Metformin ER. I love amazon and have the platinum membership so I should be able to get it fairly cheap! Thank you!

My testosterone levels were higher also.  I have never taken Provera, but Metformin is not so bad as long as you take it on a full stomach.  The Metformin ER is much easier on the stomach though.  Good Luck!  The book is really easy to find on Amazon.com.

Thanks so much for the help! I will try to have my husband look and see if he can find the book. We use amazon.com so much it probably won't be hard to find. I have my bc but no one will tell me when to take it! I am hoping that they are not going to delay it another month bc I do not want to do Provera again. It makes me crazy! I know that my doctor said that I might have to take metaforin too. Was your testosterone level higher also?

I got a book from borders but i'm sure you can find it online for cheaper.  on the positive side if you have to take bc for a month you shouldn't stress about ttc, just relax for a month, i know easier said then done.  My doc wanted me on 4 weeks of metformin before i could start clomid, i hate to say it but it was nice, no temping no peeing on things, no constant speculation of any "feeling" in my abdomen.  At the start i hated the idea of four weeks longer but once i started de-stressing it was not so bad.  I am here if you need to talk (both of you).

I've heard of the PCOS diet as well.  I believe you can order the book from Amazon.com.  I was thinking about ordering it as well, just haven't yet.  I know what you are going through.  I did all of the die tests and everything already and everything was good, just no ovulation!  This definitely *****, but all of us are here for the same reason.  It's wonderful to have the support and someone to vent with when you need to and they actually know what you are going through!  Welcome!

there is also a "pcos" diet that is basically low carb and low sugar.  i have been doing that for about a month.  no ovulation of af yet but i do have less cysts everytime i go in for an u.s.

ps I am also going to be putting myself on a strict prenatal diet along with exercise and I heard that that can make your ovulation return.

As far as I know I am not taking any clomid this month.... she wanted me on bcp so I could start af without taking provera again (i hate that stuff) so she can try me on clomid next cycle. I have to go through all of these tests so there is no point in being put on clomid this cycle. I hope she figures out what is best for me!

I understand, this really *****, I have gone through 5 rounds of clomid with no ovulation.  hopefully your doctor will come up with a plan.  So your cd4 is she having you take clomid or wait?

She said metaforin would be the best. I am not ovulating at all. I am on cd 4 and had to take provera to induce af. I am hoping that things wil be able to get to start rolling now. I have to do the dye and everything to check my tubes and check my uterus. I really have to have another consultation to talk to my fertility specialist so we can decide to go from there.

Hi nickie, sorry about your appointment, but at least now you have a diagnosis!  I was pretty crushed when i found out about my pcos but then i realized i was no longer in the unexplained category and there was treatment for me.  Most likely your doc will start you on metformin make sure you ask for extended release, the side effects are less and you can take them all at one time.  My doc started me on 1500mg metformin for 5 weeks to see if that would be enough to make me have af, it wasn't.  So then i had to take prometrium to have af, then i started clomid again... my first round with met and knowing i had pcos was my fourth round total so my doc put me on 7 days instead of 5. Are you ovulating?  Some people ovulate with the metformin alone.  As for the metformin everyone is different when it comes to side effects, i was nauseous for a few weeks and i'm great now.  However i have heard of people with gi problems from it for long periods of time.  Has your doctor said anything about how they are going to treat you?
