just wondering...

Can you have PCOS and not have cysts? The last time I had an ultrasound for that the doctor told me they only saw a normal cyst like during ovulation. My sister was diagnosed 5 or 6 years ago when she was trying to conceive, but I never had a problem conceiving until recently, and all my spotting and bleeding between periods didn't start until after my youngest child was born (she's 11 now). I'm also amazed at the different explanations and suggestions I get from different doctors....one will say try this pill, it's meant to help with bleeding betweeen periods, then the next one will say why would they recommend that, it's known to cause breakthrough bleeding....some say too much estrogen, some say higher doses....HELP! My periods are not that irregular, I get them every 26-29 days, whether or not I'm on BCP, but the bleeding and spotting between changes depending on what they are giving me. I'm convinced these low dose hormone BCP's do absolutely nothing to help me. If it is PCOS is birth control enough to control it? I am currently overweight, my weight has changed up and down a lot, but for the past few years I just can't seem to take any off no matter what I do. Will being on birth control make it even more of a challenge? Sorry for so many questions, just trying to figure out what I should be asking the doctor to look for so I can hopefully get back to a normal life!

I didn't always have cysts just on and off and my doctors think that I have had it for at least the last 10 years (I am only 24 now) but I was on birth control pills from the time I was 13 due to terrible periods. I got off of them at 16 and was determined to exercise (the pills made me gain weight) so I lost about 15 pounds got back on the pills and ended up pregnant. I could not conceive at any given time because if my weight reached over 140-145 pounds (and I am 5 feet 8 inches) then it was impossible for me to get pregnant. I went through fertility treatments (follitism and timed intercourse) and finally gave up and got to dieting and exercising and got back down to 140 pounds and ended up pregnant =0

thanks...I have not tried Yasmin, I'm not sure they'll give it to me because I used to smoke. I guess I need to try and find a doctor that knows a lot about PCOS. I don't have acne, but definitely a weight issue and a fertility issue, and obviously a hormonal one.

You don't need to have cysts in order to have PCOS. I don't have cysts, but I've had PCOS for 3 years now...if not longer. I've had a dozen ultrasounds both external and internal, and all of them showed no cysts. I take Yasmin birth control. It's one of the best out there for thouse with acne and PCOS. Have you tried that one? PCOS has a wide spread of symptoms. Some can be overweight, while others can be thin. So it's really hard to determine PCOS, while most doctors go by if you don't have cysts, then it's not PCOS...not the case at all.

thanks for your post....I haven't been diagnosed, it was suggested in another forum based on something I posted. I never even considered it before because my sister has very obvious physical symptoms, very thin hair, very overweight, and the fact that she couldn't get pregnant (she did also after losing 30 lbs). She also rarely gets her period. So I just assumed I couldn't have that same problem because my symptoms are so different. I do lose a lot of hair daily, but not having major hair growth anywhere else besides a few on my toes...I have no problem with taking birth control, I just want the doctor to hear me when I'm saying this is what's going on, help me!
