I was diagnosed with PCOS in April 2011 after not having had a menstrual cycle since I had stopped taking birth control in August of 2010. My gynecologist started me on 500 mg of metformin and told me to lay off carbs and try to lose some weight. I had my first menstrual period about a month later. Losing weight will help a lot.

It depends largely on if and how overweight you are. My doctor was very surprised that I had a cycle so soon on such a low dose, but I was dedicated and lost about 7 pounds in that first month taking Metformin.

Good luck!

HI,
Metformin helps in normalizing hormonal levels in women with PCOS, and will aid in getting menses and in conceiving. However this may take up to 3 to 6 months in order to show effects. Reducing weight will also be a big help. Consult a gynaecologist for further evaluation. Hope this helps.
Take care and good luck.
