Baby Sign Language!

Has anyone ever used this? Does it delay speech?  I haven't tried with any of my other kids but I want to with this one.

Go for it! Sign Language is a great way for baby to express they're wants and needs without getting to the frustrated, crying point. I wouldn't have gotten through a day without it. Plus, it doesn't delay the child. Instead, it actually advances the child's mind by learning communication skills so early on that talking becomes easier, earlier.

I don't have any other kids but I took 3 years of ASL & taught pre-k for 10 years.  I always incorporated it into my classes.   It's beneficial for the older kids as well as babies.

We used sign language with our baby girl starting from the age of 9 months. 2 weeks after the first class she signed for the 1st time! She enjoyed very much the songs with the signs too and still enjoys them at nearly 3. She started talking really early as was able to say about 30 or 40 words at 18 months! Expecting our 2nd one and I cannot wait to start the signs with her too. Can onl recommend it!

My 4 year old daughter used sign language. She was not delayed in speech. Bcuz they can learn the signs quicker it made communication easier. I actually 4got we did that bcuz once she started speaking we didn't use it anymore. I need 2 brush up on it again so I can teach my son.

They used baby sign language to help my daughter she was delayed in speech and would get so frustrated because she couldn't tell us what she wanted. But then we found out she has anxiety that causes selective mutism so they went a different route instead of the sign language.

When my son was younger than two the daycare taught him some like more and eat and it came in so handy to communicate before he could verbally

Me and my husband have taught our youngest how to sign. She will be 3 in July and talks up a storm but uses her hands a lot when she talks. My brother in law is deaf so we started her super young. My son is not my husbands and teaching him to sign at 4 when we got together has definitely been a challenge. My daughter can sign much better than my son. Start them young even if there isn't a reason to do it!!!!!

I'm deaf and my husband is hearing. Signing to my baby from early on that way you know what bub wants like milk more food etc simple basic dog cause they can't talk until they are a bit older.

It is supposed to decrease frustration because the part of the brain responsible for understanding and wanting to express a need or want is developed before the part responsible for speech. Sign language allows the baby to express what he/she needs before they are capable of speaking.

I have had the same question and was told that it doesn't delay them, so I really want to do that! It causes less frustration for the child (and parents, I'm sure) if they are able to express themselves, especially if the child happens to be a late talker naturally.

Does not delay them but make them smarter!!!! I'm hearing and my husband is fully deaf & our 5 year old daughter can tell you a full story in sign language! She is one of the smartest in her class. Go for it.... Continue to spread the greatness of sign language :)
