I NEVER thought I would post this question

I don't even know if I'm in the right place to post this question.  I have 3 children, ages 23, 19 and 13.  After my last child I had a tubal.  During the past couple of years I have really thought of having another baby.  I'm 40 and if you looked at me before I had my tubal I would get pregnant if I wasn't on contraceptives.  My question is, after having your tubes burned during a tubal, what is the success rate of conceiving?  Also, what is the cost.  Would it be better to have IVF or try to have my tubal reversed?  I never in a million years thought I would want more children, the children I have wore me out.  Just curious.  I'm not in a position right now to have a child but if I were to be able to I was wondering what my options would be.

I hated it too when drs called it 'advanced maternal age'.  However, I learned not all doctors do this.  My re and ob this time were very encouraging about my age (I was 44 at the time of being pregnant) and everytime I made a joke about my age, they always poo-pooed on me and told me not to be ridiculous.  Hopefully you'll find a dr who'll help you & is encouraging.  As many of women on this website can testify to, forty is not old at all to have a baby these days!  Good luck to you - I hope everything turns out great for you - jennifer

I'm 40 and I don't think of myself as old!!!  haha.  I hate when Ito to the doctor websites and they talk about 40 being "iffy" to get pregnant.  When I was younger someone could sneeze on me and I was pregnant.

I am 35 and I had a TR in April 2008. When making the decision to do so, I met with a specialist that evaluated my situation and discussed the TR procedure and IVF with me. He felt that the TR was my best choice. The surgery cost me a little over $10,000, I believe IVF is more expensive in the long run though. I became pregnant 1st time trying after the surgery, but it was ectopic (higher risk after TR) and just received the methotrexate shots yesterday. Very upsetting and worried of having another, but I am not giving up yet! I believe my dr. recommends IVF for most people 40+ because of the time factor (ie. my situation - ectopic or miscarriage), and better chance of good healthy preg; although, IVF carries an increased chance of multiples. Good luck if you decide to go through with either & fingers crossed for me as well.

Hi, I had IVF at 43.  I got pregnant the first try.  My state only performs IVF on women under 44 because the success rate is 0%.  You have some time to play with if a tubal doesn't work, but if it were me, I'd go straight to IVF.  And get acupuncture along with it.  I swear that's what did it for me.  It gets your uterus in prime circulation for conceiving.  Good luck!

My re told me the success of reversal depends mostly on age.  By the time I consulted her at age 42, it was too late according to her for a reversal but the only thing to do is to consult an re & get your options.  The IVF is around $12-15,000 & reversal's around $8,000 depending on where you live.

I also had a tubal but just had my tubes clammped with a backup clamp on each tube.  I was also wondering if it were possible to get prego after getting the clamps removed.  Lately I have been getting that wanting another baby feeling and I thought for sure after my son that was it I was done.  Its nice to hear its possible and I may consider this procedure.

A family member had her tubal reversed when she was 37.  Her tubes had been cut, burned and buried in the uterus.  She had the reversal and was told that her chances of conceiving were slim, since she was only left with one tube that was very short.  The other tube apparently was blocked and could not be re-opened.

Despite all the odds, she now has a healthily 9 year son.  Conception apparently occurred right at the moment of ovulation and the cell division was enough by the time it reached the uterus to implant successfully.

She will tell you that the surgery to have her tubes reversed was alot of pain and trouble and would have probably chosen IVF.  The only reason she didn't was her fear of having more than one baby.

If you are going to make the decision to have another baby, please do it soon.  Our eggs begin to deteriorate in our late 30's.  At least with IVF, although expensive; they can check the embryo's for any abnormalities BEFORE they place them in the uterus.

No matter which method you try, they are expensive and as I understand it, NOT covered by insurance.  Best of luck with whatever decision you make.  If it were me making the decision, I believe that I would go with IVF, so they could check the embryo's before they are implanted.  It seems to me that IVF is less traumatic for the mother and less invasive.

Good Luck in your decision.
