3 days late, pregnancy test negative

Hi, I'm brand new to this forum and a little bit about me - I'm 42 and TTC.  My husband and I saw a fertility specialist last year, and we, at his recommendation did 4 IUI's w/no positive results.  He felt the IUI's might still work even at my age, because  I fall into the "unexplained infertility" category.    In hindsight we should have just gone through the IVF, which we will do most likely in the next few months, with a new specialist.  (we stopped the fertility treatments beginning of this year for personal reasons).  My question today is, does anyone know how reliable those Dollar store pregnancy tests are.  I'm 3 days late - which is uncommon, but the test showed negative.  One other note, I ovulated on day 14 in May, which is late for me - normally I ovulate early, around day 9.   I had some brownish spotting for 3 or 4 days before my period, which is normal for me - my dr thinks its because of a very small amt of endometriosis that I have developed over the last several years.  SO, has anyone else tested 3 days late and come up negative?  If so, did you test later and have it be positive?  I'm really looking forward to your comments.  Thanks!!

It takes longer for some women to get a positive home test. I haven't tried the dollar store tests. Every test shows positive when it detects a certain amount of hCG. That amount varies between brands. I used an ept (I think it was ept) that was labeled for early detection.

As the previous poster said, wait a few days and if you haven't gotten your period, test again with first morning urine. There are many things that can cause a delayed period (stress, wonky hormones, peri-menopause). Also, for most women, the period comes about 14 days after ovulation, so having ovulated late, your period may likewise be delayed. It really needs to be 10 days or more since ovulation to get a positive home test.

That said, there are rare occasions where a woman won't get a positive urine test and is pregnant (I recall reading a post on this forum a month or so ago from a woman who tested not long before she delivered her full term infant and the home urine test was still negative). If your period does come in a week or so and you are still negative, you can see your health care provider and request a blood test.

and ema 1982...thanks for taking the time to answer. As it happens, I was just 3 days late after all.  We're going to do the IVF in July or August, depending (we will be using donor eggs or a donor embryo) and I will be back to post then.  Thanks again.  :)

Hang in there. My prayers are with you. I was told by two Dr's that I wouldn't be able to conceive, before I had my 6yr old. What do they know?? I see a feritility specialist for endometriosis because i've had to have surgery 5 times for it and no other dr will touch me. He recently told me after my last surgery that if I wanted to have another one it was now or never and because of our ages, we may not be able to. Again, what do they know?? I just found out i am pregnant 10 days ago!! We thought for sure we wld have to go thru everything you're doing now. I had taken a preg test a week b4 that because my breasts were so sore and it was neg. I took another one the day after i was supposed to start and it was pos. The were both Dollar Tree brands..so, don't waist your money on the expensive ones. I wish you both the best of luck.

Hi, and congratulations!!  I wish it would just "happen" for us, but after 3 years of monitoring my ovulation cycle, plus the IUI's, I'm pretty sure IVF is going to be the only way for us.  I'm nervous about it, in part because of the expense, but mainly I'm afraid of it not working.  I try to keep a positive attitude about it all, but with every month that goes by, the clock ticks louder, and it really is now or never for me.   We've decided to go to a different fertility specialist;  the one we were seeing was a part of a clinic where I saw a different doctor each time, and I never really felt like they paid much attention to the details.  I had to stop the treatments in January, but now is the time to start again, soooo.....I will grab my 2 inch thick folder that is my medical records and set up appointments with several specialists around town and hope I pick the best one.  If you don't mind my asking, how did you pick your specialist?  Mine was recommended by my primary care doctor, and it just didn't work out.  Any words of advice would be appreciated.  Have a great day :)
