donating breast milk?

I posted this on the breastfeeding forum but there isnt alot of activity there so I wanted to shoot it out over here too...

I saw the sweetest/sadest thing on the news the other day.  Ababy boy was born weighing only 2 lbs and the mommy pumped every 3 hours to give him "liquid gold" moms words....mom dropped dead 2 days later and the dad wanted to follow the moms desire to give her lil one breast milk.....so the lil guy received donated breast milk and did GREAT he actually went home this past Monday weighing a HUGE 6lbs....yes i cried my eyes out

Saraya is still pukin ALOT and if we decide to go to strictly formula we have a freezer full of breat milk.  Does anyone know how to go about donating I dont want it to go to waste especially after seeing this news clip :O)

Hi I was also thinking about donating my breast milk, as soon as I stop breast feeding my baby, she was born 10 weeks early and was 2lbs 13 oz I pumped th whole time she was in the NICU (6 weeks) I was finally able to try breast feeding her at 34 weeks and she did great, even though she didnt have the suck breath swallow thing down, she would suck, suck suck, swalow than breath, but the lactation consultant old me that she did better than most full term babies.  She has been a champion breast feeder since that day.  She is now 16 months old and I dont want to give up breast feeding yet, she is also a great eater.  But eventually when I do stop, I will donate.

Hey sheila,

I actually saw this on oprah a while back... moms were donating their breastmilk to  I think Africa to help the babies whose moms had aids or were orphans or something... I can't quite remember but do a google...

I wish we had a breast milk bank here locally - I'd do that in a heartbeat because even with drugs - I'm not making enough milk - I think checking with the Le Leche people would be your best bet for finding someplace to donate the milk to

That is a great idea! You know, here we have a breastmilk bank at the hospital, maybe you could check into that?? I agree that is a very tragic thing but it's so nice knowing the baby is surviving and the father is doing what he can to make sure the baby gets taken care of like mom would have done! =o)

Sheila - that's a wonderful thought and idea!  Maybe contact your local hospital or talk to La Leche League or to a lactation consult person?  Maybe they could lead you to the right place.  I hope it works out!!  Btw, that's such a sad story but it's great to read that the little guy's doing well & thriving on the donated breast milk.
