How did you/ will you decide on a name?

So partner has finally started discussing names with me.

ANd he has to be a jokester- says that GILLIGAN is the perfect name. !!!!!

Anyhow- he refuses to look thru the baby name book- like I did and wrote down what I like. He seems to deslike all mine- saying they are sissy names. He does think one of "mine" is "ok."  He wants a "manly" sounding name---

Sometimes when we are watching a TV show I will say- hey how bout that name ????

Anyhow- how did everyone out there decide on a name? Was it in your family or ????

Thank you ...

With my first pregnancy I always knew if I had a little girl I wanted to name her Quinn after my great uncle who I just adored. For me I liked the name Quinn for a girl rather than a boy.   So once she was born she was named Quinn Diann.  The Diann is for my DH's mother who passed away from brain cancer before Quinn was born.

With this pregnancy, currently 33 weeks and a boy. DH and I both always liked the name Gavin. No particular reason but it is a nice strong sounding name. His middle name will be Neil which is also the middle name of DH.

I had thought DH and I settled on a name a while a go, but that's what I get for thinking. :) The other day he came to me with a different name, so I guess it is back to the discussions for us. :)

Ask your husband to check out the website from the Social Security Administration (which assign social security numbers and therefore tracks baby names) showing the trend of names over time.  He might find it really interesting to track trends, and might "accidentally" find a baby name in the meantime.  Have him look up his own name, and see how it has increased or decreased in popularity over time.

The trends are really interesting.  For example, I was born near the height of the "Susan" craze, when it was the most popular name in the U.S. (Like today's "Emma". You can see the most popular names of recent years and track your own name's popularity over time: http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/

Dh and I took the lazy route, we used the first name of both our grand mom's.  We would have chosen our grand dad if it was a boy.  That way every one is happy including our parents

My DH refused to discuss names until we knew the baby was a girl, then immediately rejected my 2 favorite names, so in a fit of pregnant pique I insisted that the middle name be one of two family names.  He liked one of them- Byrd.  Then when we were on vacation at the beach we each went through the baby name book separately and made a list.  There were two names that were on both our lists; we took a walk on the beach and made the decision.  I wrote it in the sand, and we took a photo- boy do I cherish that photo now!  We picked a name that was old-fashioned and that I hadn't heard any children or babies being called, but since she was born I have two friends who also have little Elizas now.
I did the same thing with TV shows!  It drove my DH crazy.

We haven't decided 100%, but we shamelessly ripped off the first name from a friend of my sister's. (Neither of us actually know this guy and he lives in a different country). He just named his kid something we both love and that fits with our last name.

I've been lobbying for two middle names but DH isn't sold on the idea. I've always wanted that since I first knew a guy many years ago who had two, and his name was just so lovely.

My first daughter I decided.. . I always knew.. I wanted Ceana (sea- on- ah)  her middle name is my ex's mom.

My second Is Julieta (my kids are half latino)  I heard a song at the time that said I wanna be loved like Juliet and wow it had so much meaning to me so I named her that.  she has 2 middle names my mom was a little bitter that the first got the inlaw's name so I had to put her name in there (it is also my middle name) but I really wanted my grandma's name in there.. so she has a huge name... Francika Carolyn... (Francika is croatian).

My last is with my second husband... I let him choose kinds.. he wanted Cristina but I didn't so he found Parissa... (it was a girl's name on real world haha and also the name of the wax  use hahaha) But I really like it.. it is arabic but can be pronounced by all the latino people in the fam.. dh is peruvian...  and Shesherm on here gave me the middle name of Lynn.. and it just fit..

so no books for me haha

Amanda,

After reading your post about the two middle names- I ahd a revelation of sorts.

My partner had suggested the name- kinda- of where our son (and previous child) were conceived. It is a special place for us-

IT CAME TO me that with the first initial of the one name that he could stand that I liked- we could spell out our fav place with the INITIALS using two middle names. Maybe that is kinda weird- I donno- dont care. But the "name" it spells is sorta more of a nickname sounding name- so I think it would be cool. I am going to bring it up to partner this evening after work. :)

Thanks for the idea of two middle names ... :)

I think Gilligan sounds good but drop the second G lol.  I haven't had any kids but we've decided when and if we fall a boy will be Billy rather than William as i can't really pronounce William correctly because of my slang scottish accent.  For a girl it will be Alana after her dad my partner is Alan.  I also like Demi and Danielle for a little girl but can't think of any more boys names its to hard.

I hope you have a very easy labour and best of luck picking names i just hope i'll get my BFP sometime in 2010

We still haven't decided and only have 6 weeks to go!  I have a few I like, but my DH is doing the opposite of yours.  He reads all these name books and has to analyze every name to the hilt.....the meaning of it, possible nicknames, etc. etc.  It's driving me nuts!  I swear that man is giving me enough material to write a book...lol.

We do have middle names (our little guy is going to have two of them).  They are both family names.
