What is the procedure for treating an etopic pregnancy?

Im 34 and while on the birth control injections and w/o a period for 8 months I found out I was pregnant. Blood tests were ordered and an ultrasound the same day.  I then was sent directly to have a perinatle dr peform an internal ultra sound which indicated i was about 11 weeks along with baby A & B... After leaving and getting over the shock of all tI start to spot lightly - My dr said it may be due to sex and to let him know if I start to flow... It went away then a few days later I start to spot pretty heavily.  I went to the ER they took some blood & did another ultra sound.  When the dr came back he metioned that my blood tests indicated I may have an etopic pregnancy.  I went back to my regular doctor 2 days later (and still spotting) My dr also indicated I had an ectopic pregnancy. I am now 13 weeks and have to have a D & C.

Is this normal? I dont really understand what is going on.

Hi,

THere is something wrong with what you've been told.  Treatment for ectopic pregnancy is not D&C.  It is either surgery or a drug to stop the pregnancy.  If blood levels show something abnromal, that is different from the ultrasound - is there a conflict between the two?

Don't proceed or rush with anything until you're very clear on what you've been told and sure it is accurate and comfortable with decision about what will be done.

Ask the technician or doctor to show you on the ultrasound what they're talking about.

Agree totally with 40smamma as well.

I don't understand either - usually they either give a shot to dissolve the pregnancy like Methotrexate or have to remove the tube if it bursts.  With you being so far along, it would seem that you already would've had this happen.  Are you pregnant w/twins?  If you have an ectopic, why would they do a D&C?  I'd definitely ask some questions before undergoing this procedure.  This is really puzzling.

I'm sorry for your m/c! - jen

P.S.  I also don't understand why they didn't see the ectopic or lack of an intrauterine pregnancy on the first internal u/s.  If you were that far along, they should've seen two fetuses w/heartbeats.  This is very much concerning.
