blighted ovum???

Hi, I am 41. got pregnant first month of trying. At the caluclated age of 7 weeks 4 days, I went in for ultrasound, the Dr could see something on ultrasound but said it was "way at the back" & was having a hard time seeing it. He said it looked 6 weeks. He said to come back in 1 week for repeat ultrasound. Did HCG levels 4 days apart-first was 88,000, 2nd was 114,000. Then I went in for ultrasound the next week & he was not yet in the office so his technician did the ultrasound. She did the abdominal & transvaginal ultrasound. She did not put the probe in nearly as much as he had-only maybe an inch or so. Could only find the sac, nothing else. My husband & I both noticed, however, that there was a pulsation just past the edge of the sac-appeared faster than my pulse & was in only 1 spot. Technician said it must have been my arteries & veins & switched on the control which showed my arteries. It was not in the same place. Dr came in after & said I "probably" had a blighted ovum & need to have D&C. This whole thing does not sit right with me. I have seen so many instances of misdiagnosed blighted ovums. My sister said it happened to her as well-only a sac was seen at first. My sac appeared normal-not collapsed & completely normal hormones (progesterone too). Strong pregnancy symptoms not subsiding either. I also am concerned that the technician did not put transducer in all the way & Dr had to dig to find baby at other end. I was told in past that my uterus is tipped too. Any thoughts anyone? I am having a 2nd opinion on Wednesday the 16th.

Thanks everyone for your support. I had my D&C today and all went well, no pain or problems, some mild cramping but feeling good. Pregnancy nausea is already gone which I am happy about since it was for no reason!!  Will check out the TTC after miscarriage link.

I feel really sorry 4 u Erin, because of all the things you are going throught. i really feel ... I'm having the same bad experience u had, with my stupid Dr.
If something is wrong i think a good Dr should know how to talk with their pacients. U did rigth thing by looking for the second opinion,  at least u endup finding a good Dr who makes u feel confident even facing sad reality of having abnormal pregnancy.
I had  (i canceled already) an appt. tomorrow with that stupid Dr. I saw twice in my life, because if something is (really) wrong with my pregnancy,(hope not) I wish I have a sensetive Dr, like this one you found, to tell me. I scheduled  with a new Dr, hope he is diferent and doesn't work only for money.  I'm prayng for me and for all of us, even if something goes or went wrong, to give us strenght to start over again. I Feel very sorry for u. But... keep us posted after Tuesday, i believe in miracle, and pregnancy is one of them. Untill u get a D&C done u don't  know... If the bad news is still there, don't loose your faith u will have a good, next, pregnancy. Keep taking care of  u while you're trying again. Good luck and God bless all pregnancy.

I'm sorry hun ;(  for my BO  I was the same way, I had a US done @ 6.5 weeks, & all we could see was the sac & yolk sac & was measuring like 4.5-5 weeks,  I KNEW it wasn't right ;(  Had the US cuz of a cyst I had on my ovary.  Anyway, I had 2 days of GOOD crying, so by the time I began to mc 4 days later, I was FINE!  Almost relieved to get it over with.  Somehow knowing no baby was ever in there, made this mc sooo much easier emotionally.  NOW physically , it was the most painful one out of my 3!  Go figure!

Hang in there, & I am soooo happy you love your new DR.  Makes a HUGE difference! ;D

Well went to new Dr today & found out is in indeed a blighted ovum! ***** but I am doing okay-had my crying out last week so guess I was prepared for it more. I love the new doctor and I have a D & C on Tuesday. I spoke to him about how long we need to wait to try again and he said 2-3 months. My old doctor said 1 cycle. Guess they all differ in their opinions. Anyhow we plan on trying again in a couple months & he said the blighted ovum is a fluke thing & should have a normal pregnancy next time but he said not to waste time as I am 41! So I plan on staying on this site so I can share my experiences as I start this journey over again! (=  I am encouraged considering I got pregnant the first month we tried! It helps to have all of you who are going through similar experiences to share things with!
Thanks for your support!! One positive in this whole mess is I found a great doctor. Very patient, willing to answer lots of questions, and took his time going over the ultrasound to make sure no embryo. Just a placenta was found. *****!!

Thanks everyone, it is nice to have a place to talk to others who understand & to vent!!!
Tomorrow is my big day to find out one way or the other. Hopefully all the positive thoughts will be correct!! Still pregnant & feeling all the usual symptoms!!
Will post tomorrow and let everyone know. This doctor's staff was way more friendly just on the phone. And a friend goes to him too. If I do need a D&C, I will go to the new one I am sure. Won't go back to other.

I would absolutely trust your own instincts on this one. Don't consider a D & C if you have doubts. The machines and the Dr's are not always right and it certainly won't hurt you to let things just keep progressing for now anyway. With all of my sons I went into the hospital in labor only to be hooked up to their machines and told I was NOT in labor and that it was braxton hicks. Each time they were wrong. With my last son when they said I wasn't in labor, my ex just looked at me and asked me if I was and when I said yes, he told the nurses we weren't going anywhere. I didn't even see a nurse or a Dr until I hit transition and sent hubby for a bucket to vomit in. They came back in and I was almost fully dilated and they said, " oh sorry. I guess we were wrong" LOL  The machines don't catch everything and Dr's are human and sometimes make mistakes. YOU'LL know when (and IF!) a D & C is right for you. Mama Nature will let you know. I hope all is well. Good luck!!!

Holy Moly...I am going to vomit....not from morning sickness but from this idiot DR.  I would love his number and call him give him a piece of my mind!!

He need to reported to someone!

Will not do a VBAC becuae of econimical reasons? He CANNOT say that!   ....he is an AZZZZZZ!!

PLEASE stay away from him!  Glad new DR this week...phew. Uggggggggg

All will be fine and you will look back and laugh at how idiotic this DR was....

Your doctor needs you to fire him! What an awful bedside manner. Find another one that maybe one of your friends suggests. I hope everything works out beautifully for you and please dont ever go to see that awful doctor again!
hugs,
angela

Thanks for all your comments. After cancelling my D & C last Friday & questioning the results, my doctor's office called today to schedule 'a follow up appt.' Which I do not get. He said he did not have a doubt that 'this is not a normal' pregnancy. So what would I need to go for appt for at his office?? Anyhow, I will let all you know my results at new doctor.
Just to let you know, at my first appt I asked the doctor about having a VBAC & he said he does not like to do them because they are not 'economical' for him. Said he has to sit with the patient at the hospital (hospital policy) & has to cancel his patients.

Hi,

Yes, no rush to do anything.  These doctors start looking and speculating way too early.

Also you don't necessarily need a D&C even if it were not 'viable'.

Nature can take care of these things.  Hopefully Mother Nature is taking care of a perfect baby for you.

I would absolutely get another opinion.  If your not bleeding or cramping, then there's no rush in MY opinion.
I would see another DR & get another VAGINAL US not abdominal, in the next 4-7 days & see if there are any changes, which by waiting about a week, there should be.

Good luck, & please keep us posted.

Hi Erin,
First...congrats!
Second, I am so sorry these DR's have their heads up their you know what.  That doe not sound normal to me and so happy you are getting a second opinion.

I have seen threads on tipped uterus which makes it difficult to see the baby, perhaps someone can shed light on that.

To jump to Blighted Ovum/D&C so fast is a bit much!  On top of that ...he said he could see "something"...uuufffff....Geeeesshhhhh...how professional and love his bedside manners.

Let us know how 2nd opinion goes...all will be just fine!

PS...I am 7w1d and will have my Ultrasound on Wed as well! We'll have to compare notes...:-)
