frustration

Im now 6 weeks... I had what I though would be my first prenatal exam but it was with the counselor.. my appointment with the actual OB is on the 28th. Today the counselor calls an says I scheduled your ultra sound for september 30. This upsets me cuz I told her I think im either further along or.. carrying twins cuz I feel heavy and showing already and im having almost constant stretching cramps. So I voiced that to her again and she said oh well we dont do ultrasounds here. Wait WHAT?? What kind of OB doesnt have an US machine on site??

My OB doesn't have an onsite u/s machine either.  And unless you are high risk, normally you won't have your first u/s until around 18-20 weeks.  A lot of insurances will only cover one ultrasound during a healthy pregnancy.  Just take care of yourself and try not to worry!  And congratulations!

My doctors office doesn't have an US machine either, which I thought was kinda weird too but apparently it's pretty normal after reading all these posts!

Btw, my OB doesn't have an US machine on site either. I had to go to the hospital to get mine, and drive an hour and a half away for the 4 d specialty one.

Even if you are pregnant w twins, having your us earlier won't change anything. Ie. There is nothing they would do differently,  at this stage (or even a month from now), other than tell you, "Congrats! You're having twins!" Anyway, just relax. You will get the care you need. Best wishes and take care.

My OB doesn't do ultrasounds at their office which is a fairly common practice. My ultrasounds are done at an imaging center. And the first appointment is usually with a counselor or nurse (which you don't see a doctor) just to talk about medical history and to go over what to expect during pregnancy. I didn't see a doctor until I was about 11-12 weeks. I understand being anxious but what you are describing is very very common. I didn't have my first ultrasound until 10 weeks and that is only because I had 2 miscarriages before this pregnancy.  Even if you are further along or carrying twins you would still be on just about the same timeline for Dr appointment and ultrasound as you are now, it's later in the pregnancy which would make a difference. Take a deep breath you are fine.

Change doctors if your unsatisfied. They should be listening to your requests and fulfilling the ones that are within reason. If not, move on.

The first ultrasound is usually around 8 weeks, unless you are high risk (I had one at 6 weeks and one at 7). You wouldn't necessarily be bigger than average just yet, because the babies are still smaller than an apple. I wouldn't worry until you get there. Best luck

Consider yourself lucky- we don't get ultrasounds until 20 weeks along and we have a very good well equipped hospital! However, they couldn't find the heartbeat at my first appt (14 wks), and the external measurement of my uterus was larger than it should have been and so they did one to check. I hear your frustration but just hang in there and it will come sooner than you think. Plus, the baby/babies will be bigger and you will be able to see more features. Finally, here has been some research that suggests frequent ultrasounds can stress the baby. They used to offer ulttasounds in pharmacies years ago, just like a blood pressure check, but stopped because of the research that showed fetal stress.
