Miscarriage or too early to see anything on ultrasound?

I thought I was 8-9 weeks pregnant. Spotting after the 5th week and then Tuesday it became heavier; like a period. I had cramping in my lower abdomen (center) for a little over an hour. I passed some tissue that was  bloody and grayish in color. I took it in with me to the ER that night and after ultrasounds and bloodwork, the doctor came up with 2 theories:
1. I had a miscarriage
2. I am not as far along as originally thought and it's too early to see anything in the uterus.
My hcg level was 856 that night; within the normal range of 4-6 weeks.

My cervix was closed.

I am going on Monday for a repeat blood test to see if the level increased or decreased over the last few days....
I still feel as pregnant as I did. Still bleeding and cramps here and there- nothing unbearable though.

I went back today. One week after my 856 level and uncertain ultrasound. I should be 6-7 weeks by now. The doctor still saw nothing on the ultrasound. Plus, he extracted this 2-3 inch thing from my cervix. I am SO confused and so was he. This whatever was NOT seen last week!!! How could it not have been detected? And what else that large can "form" in a week's time??? They are sending it to the lab along with another hcg level blood test.

It's hard to say right now what is going on.  Unfortunately you have to wait and see and I know that is so hard. I wish you all the best.

With a level of 856 definitely wouldn't see anything on the ultrasound.  Usually you have to be over 1500 to see.  Unfortunately, you just have to wait and see what your next level is, if it goes down then you have ur answer.  Good luck to you.
