sleep positioners

Hi everyone.  I was just wondering if any of you are going to use a sleep positioner?   I am a little confused as some people say anything in the crib could cause SIDS you are not even supposed to use a blanket just a sleep sac or swaddler.  Others use the sleep positioner.  What are your opinions/experiances?
any thoughts would be really appreciated
Thanks

I have a sleep positioner I will use. My reason is because I don't trust putting baby on her back or stomach. I feel both positions have their hazards and I always put my other two on their sides. Well, now they say not to do that either. The positioner I got will keep her on her back, but also reclines which resolves my concern for her being on her back. If she is reclined I know she wont choke.

It's called AngelCare.  I bought it at WalMart I believe, or perhaps Sears.  It was one of the major department stores I know.  I am pretty certain you can order it on line as well.  As for cost, it was a bit pricier then the other monitors out there, but then again it does a lot more.  It was about $150.00 I think.  And you know, if memory serves me I am pretty certain I saw it at Babies R Us as well.  Let me know if you want me to find the website for you!!

Good luck!!

Thank you everyone for your posts.  I think I will also not use one.

Amanda  what type of monitor is it that you are going to use.  It sounds perfect where did you get it from and how much was it? I haven't seen any thing so comprehensive

Ecologic   Thanks for the fan tip although I don't know if we will use it during winter because the room can get really cold

Thanks again everyone I feel much better about how to put my baby to bed at night when she arrives

We have decided not to use a sleep positioner, I read bad things about this system. We will go with first a swaddle blanket then with a sleep bag and nothing else in the crib.

An other thing I have read: that a fan in the room of the baby helps decrease SIDS because the baby is less bound to breath in carbon dioxide that otherwise may accumulate by his face so my husband will install a ceiling fan in the baby room.

we tried a sleep positioner, she was 5lb or 6lbs and managed to roll around and down, this did not make us comfortable.

if you're a first time mom (like i was) i didn't realize that a newborn is all about gas management and spit up / reflux.  we got a crib wedge which raises them slightly in the crib. we used swaddles blankets (but she's a wriggler and managed to get herself in a bind), sleep sacks are good, just don't overdress them so that they overheat.good luck

I talked to quite a few members about this issue that have small babies and children.  There was at least one pediatric nurse that I trust completely...she has years of experience.  I have also spent a whole lot of time on the SIDS web sight.  I have decided I will not use one.  Basically I have found out that in the beginning it's not necessary as they cannot roll over anyway.  However, the positioners can shift and can (in rare circumstances mind you) cause baby to smother.  By the time they are big enough to roll over their necks are strong enough that them smothering isn't an issue unless there are extra objects in the crib.  So for my little guy no positioners, no bumpers, blankets or stuffed toys.  I did buy sleep sacs and swaddlers.  I am also so paranoid about the whole SIDS issue (way more then is healthy I am sure) I also bought the monitor with pad that goes under the mattress and sounds an alarm if he doesn't move for 10 seconds (or something like that) and it has an alarm that also goes off if the nursery goes above a certain temperature.  I know, I'm paranoid....but I can't seem to help it.  Anyway, hope this info helps you make your decision and good luck!!!!

Good question! :) We're planning to use positioners, because we're having twins & I'm on bedrest due to threatened preterm labor, so I'm sure they'll be early & small. I assumed the positioners would be perfect, but would love to hear what everyone else has to say.
