Hi,
I'm 40 and my fertility doctor has me starting clomid for the first time.  I've read so much poor success rates for women at 40 using clomid.
If any one out there in this Pregnancy 35+ forum conceived on clomid....I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU.
I am to start on the 3rd day of my cycle this coming cyle.
thank you

Hi ladies, I too am from Toronto (Ajax) and am going to be 37 this year.  I just had a son 7 months ago, he is a wonderful baby, and he has Down syndrome.  He is probably the best thing that ever happened to me and my husband, and we wanted to have another child right away, so that a sibling would help our son and be close in ages.  (Plus being older, I didn't want to risk any other serious genetic problems)  I was unable to conceive our first son naturally bc I have a pituitary tumour, (Hyperprolactenemia) which is where the tumour secretes prolactin.  I took a standard treatment medication called Dostinex, and within 8 weeks was pregnant.  Now, since I was still breastfeeding our son, and wanted to try to conceive, I needed to take some fertility drug to help (bc I don't ovulate despite breastfeeding - which obvioulsly additionally doesn't help).  Since I was Breastfeeding we opted to try Clomid (50mgs) and I did ovulate all three cycles, but nothing happened.  I just found out a few days ago by blood test that I was not pregnant again.  My Clomid was given to me by my Family Doc, and I was referred to a fertility specialist, which we saw last week.  Unfortunately he is not too happy with me wanting to try other fertility drugs while breastfeeding so I had to make a decision to wean my son.  That was a hard decision, but nature kind of had the same plans because I am drying up anyway.  With that all happening, I thought to myself, I might as well try the Dostinex again, since I am pretty well not breastfeeding anymore, and see if I get pregnant like last time.  So, AF is supposed to arrive tomorrow, and even thought it is kind of crazy to hope I may still be pregnant, I am still wishing.  Once AF comes, I will start the Dostinex and keep my fingers crossed that we get pregnant fast like the first time.
So, wish me luck and I am going to keep a watch for and with the rest of you, and Congrats Teddy, I think I read that you are pregnant!  And Msacha - my heart goes out to you - what a story.  I can't say I know how you feel, but I can imagine.  It is certainly frustrating to TTC, when others around you are practically getting pregnant by a toothbrush (my bestfriend - that is our joke for her).  I am never bitter, but I am trying for more than just me and my husband (who already has 3 other kids previous marriage).  Our son needs a sibling.  I hope that doesn't sound silly.

To answer your question, I was supposed to be 11weeks and 2days or so.  However the baby was only 7weeks when it died.  Here's the story.  Three weeks ago, at week 8 we discovered through ultrasound a 6 week old embryo with no heartbeat.  I chose a natural miscarriage (something I had never wished to do and haven't voluntarily done ever).  My doctor suggested it to avoid scaring my uterus and I played along.  A week and a half passed and I still didn't miscarry, instead, my pregnancy symptoms persisted as if I were pregnant still.  I got aggravated and tired of it and asked my doc to arrange a D&C.  My doc agreed but still ordered an u/s done on the Friday previous to my Tuesday D&C.  During the ultrasound we found no heartbeat and no growth of the embryo.  He still ordered blood work to check HCG, but we proceeded to prepare for the surgery.  On Monday the doctor called me and asked that I went again for another u/s because my hormone levels were tooooooooo high still (~64,000).  Well, what do you know, my baby's heart was now beating!  So, hours away from the D&C we cancelled it, and cautiously waited to see the baby grow.  We weren't sure if it was the same baby or what had happened.  It looked as though the baby had been on "hold" for two weeks and then it started his/her life again.  We all know that this can't really be that good, but we were just waiting and hoping that it had a good end.  Unfortunately, about two weeks after that, the baby died, this time for real!  So now, I'm waiting till Monday for the surgery to remove what's left in my uterus.  This is my fourth documented miscarriage.  I've never carried passed week 8.

I do know a lot about my body and about pregnancy.  I started trying to get pregnant on and off since 1997.  It was a different husband then, and well... it's a long story.  However, every time I've gotten pregnant, except for this one time, I wasn't trying to get pregnant or using anything to help me out.  This time I did use clomid, (because my doc insisted that I should try, when I went for my annual), but my state of mind was totally different.  I just took it as an excuse to have fun, and get closer to my husband.  We were just being silly and wild- to be quite honest.  We weren't really trying, from a mental stand point, and never for a minute thought that it would actually work.  This says a lot about how the body works!  That's advice to you!

I'm fortunate enough to have raised two boys that for some reason or another "fell on my hands".  They are biologically related to my husband (one is an orphaned nephew and the other is his older son)  They are 15 and the other is 17, I've raised them since they were still very little, they are my sons!  This is why having a biological child would be so wonderful and welcomed by all in my family, but also, not an absolute need, from my point of view.

Again, if you need anything, or want to ask more questions, I'll be happy to share.  Sorry if I gave you more details than you wanted to hear. :)

Msacha....I'm so sorry that you miscarried :(  Sounds like you have certainly not had an easy road with conceiving :(
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply.
How far along were you when you miscarried this time?  For your sake I hope it was not too far along....not that it makes it any easier!
It sounds like you've done some research though on how your health troubles are affecting your fertility and I *do* hope you get some answers.
You know I did wonder about how it would affect your "desire" and that's reassuring to hear because as it is when you are TTC, it can become a little mechanical and a lot less about just enjoying your partner.
I wish you all the luck!!  Keep me posted on your road to finding answers.

Ladies, I'm also 39 and I did get pregnant on my first month of clomid.  I was on 100mg, which is not the middle dose they prescribe.  My case is somewhat similar to all of yours.  I still seem to be ovulating every month, and also experience unexplained fertility issues.  Sadly I miscarried and will go through D&C on Monday.  The miscarriage is probably not a direct result of the Clomid.  I've miscarried every single time I've gotten pregnant.  There are probably other issues at hand too.  I suffer from terrible allergies to many, many, many things (environmental, and food wise).  I also suffer from asthma.  All of these things, coupled with some others, point to a problem with the immune system.  It is haywire and attacks everything in sight, including probably any baby I conceive.  That's the next step for me, finding out a little more about that through an immunologist and an reproductive endocrinologist.

Teddybear, I hope that you are able to conceive soon.  Clomid is not so bad.  It makes me a little hotter than usual (like hot flashes), and it also makes me want to have fun at night-if you catch my drift!!! ha, ha!  So I find that very helpful.  I usually get 3 mature follicules while on clomid, and that increases my chances.  I hope it does the same for you.

Good luck my friend!

Hi Teddy

That's good that you had all the tests. I think that the fact you know what the problem may be is a good thing from what I've heard.  I was relieved that our tests were all normal, but somehow it makes it worse, because they don't know what to fix!! I would like to give it time, as I hate taking pills but ya know... not getting any younger and have be TTC for a year.

It will be interesting to see what other people say about Clomid and the side effects etc. I'll keep you posted after my appointment and let you know what he suggests we do next.  (the nurse told me a whole bunch of stuff, but she didn't know exactly which ones he would recommend). I think IUI is around $200 and for me a lot of these pills/injections are partially covered by my insurance or my husbands. How about you? Will the Clomid be covered?

It's great to have another Canadian to discuss this with.  Sounds like we are at similar stages.  I don't know if I would consider IVF. I didn't realize it was THAT Much!! Wow!
I have a friend who used it twice, she has PCOS and had a boy the first time and now is expecting twins!

CONGRATS Worried!!!! I'm so excited for you!!! Makes me think I should consider Clomid or whatever else the Dr. recommends.  Did you try anything else before the Clomid? Did you have side effects?

Not very familiar with the site myself... I think I added a few friends, but not sure how to leave a message.  Let me know if you figure it out!

A HUGE CONGRATS TO YOU!!  HOW THRILLING!!!  And I can't tell you how great it is to hear a success on clomid on a low dose at our age.  My doctor is also starting me on the low dose.
Can I ask you if your doctors found any thing in particular that was preventing you from becoming pregnant or any reason why they put you on clomid?
Just would love to compare stories.
Man I sure hope I see a BFP one day soon!!
Oh, also, did you have any side effects on the clomid?  I've heard horror storries and also such low success rates at our age on clomid.  I dunno what to think anymore.
I really hope you have a wonderful pregnancy!
Please write back :)
Also, I don't know much about this site......is there a way to chat to your "friends" on here rather then going through these messages?  Like a msn of sorts?

Hi Hopefulcb!!!  I remember you.....you're from Toronto also :)
Ya, my fertility doctor run the whole series of tests on me.  I have a great fsh level but what he found was that my LH is a little high.  He said my hormones are a little out of wack so he suspects that there are some months I am not ovulating (although he told me this month I did ovulate, the blood tests showed an LH surge).....so because certain months I don't ovulate, this is why is prescribed the clomid.  He doesn't seem worried and seems hopeful but I just have such a bad feeling about my chances.  I've just read such poor success rates for clomid for women over 40 :( :(
He said he doesn't feel that IUI is necessary yet.  I guess we'll see.
I'm so happy for you that they didn't find anything wrong though in all your tests!  That's a positive sign.  Since we both live in Canada it's great that we can talk about the cost of the fertility treatments.  I haven't done much research on IUI.  What does it cost roughly?  Have you thought about whether or not you would pay for IVF if needed?  10 grand!  So expensive.  And some couples do many rounds of IVF!  Crazy.
Listen, best of luck at your appointment in 2 weeks.  Please keep me posted!  fingers crossed for you :)

I'm almost 39, this was my second month taking clomid, lowest dose, and I just got my BPF a few days ago!!! If your b/w is within normal range, I don't think it "can hurt". GOOD LUCK!!!

Hi Teddy

Did they do any investigations first? I will probably be looking at Clomid as well as we have unexplained fertility.  We aremeeting with the Dr in a couple of weeks (day 3) to discuss options but the nurse said most likely Clomid or Femara with 2 injections (can't remember the names) and IUI.  Unless of course I'm pregnant right now 2WW)

I'm a but apprehensive as I hate taking medication but will discuss options with The Dr when we see him.

oh, and I'm 39 and trying TTC for about 1 yr
