alcohol 1t 6 weeks pregnant

by bvb, Apr 16, 2008 04:49PM
I was informed I had a miscarriage at 6 weeks exactly.  Md. Said there was nothing in the sac, and that my progesterone dropped significantly.  Three days later, i went in for a D& C and they found a strong heartbeat.  During those three days, i was so anxious and depressed about the miscarraige, I drank soo much (probably 15 drinks in one night) and took Vicodin for cramping, Pamprin, and Tylenol PM.While i am so happy to not have had a miscarriage, I am devastated that I was told I was no longer pregnant, and drank and took pills.  I have never taken anything before this, or will I after.  What are the chances the baby will get fetal alcohol syndrome or birth defects from this???  I am soo scared.  bvb

Hi:

First, congrats on your preg.
Second, don't beat yourself up too much.  I have had 10 m/cs and each time have been known to drink way more than I should have afterwards.

I've heard two things.  One, that it takes awhile for things to be absorbed through the placenta - more like at  10 weeks.  Nature's way of protecting things before you even know you are preg.  I'm not sure how accurate this is, but plenty of women have drank not knowing they are preg.  Heck, a lot of women do more than drink and go on to have normal kids.  I'm not saying it's right, but it happens. Two, my OB says there is usually an "all or nothing" effect.   So if you saw the heartbeat, looks like things should be OK.

Just start taking care of yourself, eat healthy, take your vitamins.

Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Of course you would have to ask your dr. but I had a similar situation.  I was told after 3 maybe 4 ultrasounds that my I had a 7 1/2 week old w/no hb.  To make a very long story short I embibed lots of alcohol after my D&C was scheduled. I went in the day after Superbowl Sunday, hungover, for my D&C and they found a NEW baby in my uterus. YIKES, WHAT A SHOCKER.... I had never miscarried the old baby before getting pregnant again and no this was not a twin. Anywho I have a perfectly healthy 18mo old dd. Good luck.

As the others said, I really wouldn't be too hard on yourself.  All the research I have done on fetal alcohol syndrome says you have to consume alcohol pretty regularly during pregnancy for your baby to get it.  Obviously its a bad idea to drink during pregnancy, but it was one time, and you were under pretty serious emotional stress at the time.  As for the pills, I would think same thing.  I seriously doubt 1 episode is going to do any damage.  Talk to your Dr., put your mind at ease, but I bet you find all is well.  Although I am sorry you had to go through all that emotional turmoil, I am so happy for you they were mistaken.  Good luck on your pregnancy.

I am truley sorry to hear you were led to beleive that you miscarried which prompt you to drink alcohol. The question is simple. What are the chances of my baby having any type of medical issues if I drank 15 (Specific drink) one night and took a seires of Vicodin, Pamprin and Tylenon PM? That is a professional question a doctor (Not the same doctor or doctor's office) should answer and should well document for future reference. Future reference? Perhaps non-profit legal advised for possible malpratice may be considered. I know somethimes we as humans make mistakes, but professionals can't afford to make those same mistakes. I know this did not answer your question, but I hope it tells you to look outside the box and take steps to protect you and your future child. I will pray that you and your baby will be just fine and wish the very best to you!

darn.. I would be sooo ticked at that dr who informed you of a m/c!!!
makes you wonder how many D&C were done that shouldnt of been?? please get yourself a new dr!
I would think all will be fine?... any surprised pergancy.. we all have done things that we shouldnt have. I didnt know I was pregnant till the 8th week.. and I have had my share of drinks on the week-ends. My ob just smiled and told me there is a grace period for that reason.
Now mine isnt as extreem as yours. but I would think something would of happened m/c already...if this was the case.
Get yourself a new dr and try not to beat yourself up... You didnt know!!
congratulations!!!

To: all
thanks for the uplifting words.  I haven't slept a wink since this happened.  And the baby needs rest.  for anyone who is ever told they had a miscarriage, please don;t jump to conclusions until they have taken a second ultrasound.  I am hearing that misdiagnosis of miscarriage is all too frequent, and what horrible consequences it can have.  bvb

AWWEEEE first of all I am so sorry you're going thru such hard time and the ups and downs...... but look at it from a positive perspective! YOU ARE PREGGY!!!! yay!!!

Now about the alcohol, i would say baby will be fine... you didn't know!... just ask your doctor, but i think a lot of women don't even know they are pregnant at that stage and drink and do things.... and then find out they were pregnant! yikes! and go on to have healthy babies!
It'd be another thing if you'd do this on a regular basis (more than once) all throughout your pregnancy.

ENJOY happy healthy nine months! =)
