Your doctor is the best person to address this but from what I know (from the developmental pediatricians I work with), in most cases everything is fine and one artery is enough to support a healthy pregnancy.  The main risk is that single umbilical artery is associated with other birth defects in the fetus (including chromosomal abnormaliites but mainly heart, gastro, and CNS defects).  It can also results in low birth weight and premature birth so most doctors monitor the baby's growth extra carefully.  But again, remember that these associations are in a minority of pregnancies with single umbilical artery and there is high likelihood that everything will be fine.

I've never heard of this problem. What has your Dr. told you?
