which test is best to do laparoscopy or hysterosalpingogram

my husband and i having been trying to conceive for a year and his tests normal. but why i am not getting pregant. the doctor wants to do a laproscopy i had it done 3 years ago by another doctor found nothing. can i ask to have another test done like the one called hysterosalpingogram.

would the HSG be more helpful to see if i have a blockage rather than having  laparoscopy done

The reason why your doctor probably wants to do a laparoscopy is if he sees anything wrong when he is in there he will fix it while he is there.  If they do the HSG and see something wrong they would have to do the laparoscopy to fix anything that is wrong anyway, so why not just skip the HSG?

Good luck with your decision.

Hi mbabs!

I had a HSG ( hysterosalpingogram) done 1 year ago and it revealed a blocked fallopian tube. It's a fairly simple and quick exam... minimum pain, you get up on stirrups and they inject dye in your uterus and they take some kind of x-rays photos... I did it on my lunch break and went right back to work an hour later with no discomfort.

As far as a lap is concerned, I had one done 2 years ago because I had an ectopic pregnancy... I had to go through an emergency laparascopy, I was put under full anasthesia and after a few hours, I was sent home with a bunch of pain killers... I got an internal infection 24 hours later and was rushed back to the hospital for 5 days with heavy fever and pain... a terrible experience.

I'm not a doctor but it seems that as a 1st "exploratory" exam, the HSG is a nice place to start...

good luck!
