hcg and prog levels

Hi

I'm 43 and just found out I'm pregnant again naturally. I am 4.5 weeks and my hcg level is 65 and my progesterone is 52
would these levels be indicative of a viable pregnancy

I'm afraid that Y's right - the time to celebrate is when you see a nice healthy heartbeat at 7 weeks.  Fertility clinics don't see problem pregnancies - they see women trying to get pregnant at all.  But that's neither here nor there.

The only thing you can do at this point until you have your first u/s is to have your levels checked in a two day period like meli said.  Good luck w/everything...........

Congratulations on your pregnancy!  Please know that women in their 40s DO have successful, natural pregnancies!  They won't necessarily visit these internet forums, especially if they're NOT having problems with their pregnancies!  My 42-year old sister is one of these.

I am weary of the negative speak.  Statistics are gathered by fertility clinics who, by their very reason of existence, only see the problem pregnancies.

The following is a guide that I copied from the American Pregnancy Association (I hope I'm allowed to do that here.)  You'll note the wide range.

Guideline to hCG levels during pregnancy:
hCG levels in weeks from LMP (gestational age)* :

3 weeks LMP: 5 - 50 mIU/ml
4 weeks LMP: 5 - 426 mIU/ml
5 weeks LMP: 18 - 7,340 mIU/ml
6 weeks LMP: 1,080 - 56,500 mIU/ml
7 - 8 weeks LMP: 7, 650 - 229,000 mIU/ml
9 - 12 weeks LMP: 25,700 - 288,000 mIU/ml
13 - 16 weeks LMP: 13,300 - 254,000 mIU/ml
17 - 24 weeks LMP: 4,060 - 165,400 mIU/ml
25 - 40 weeks LMP: 3,640 - 117,000 mIU/ml
Non-pregnant females: <5.0 mIU/ml
Postmenopausal females: <9.5 mIU/ml

I wish you all the best!

Oh yes and i recommend getting ultrasound at 7 weeks not at 6.5 or 6.3 because the heartbeat could be questionable at that point and cause worry.   You should have a nice high HB at 7 weeks.

And by the way your hcg levels should that pregnancy is going in the right direction when they are properly doubling.  Once hcg levels just tells you that the pregnancy hormone is in your body.

To be honest....hcg level of 65 is borderline.  Yes you have a positive pregnancy result.  but if you are getting an hcg level of 65 at 19 DPO (or 4.5 weeks) it's not that great of an hcg level.   You hcg level really should be, according to my infertilty doctor, around 100 at 15DPO (one day after y ou miss your period).     So depending on when your hcg level was drawn 65 could be borderline.     So when did you have your hcg level drawn???

And are you having it drawn again???

And the level isn't quite indicative of a viable pregnancy.   It just means you're pregnant.  To determine if it's viable (a pregnancy that will continue) you have to wait until you get an ultrasound that shows the embryo is in utero and has a healthy heartbeat.   Then you can call it a viable pregnancy.

Of course you are talking to 43 year old that's been around the block a few times (5 miscarriages), and that's why you're getting this answer vs.....congrats and super sticky baby dust and all the other silly kudos they like to say.

Get to that ultrasound where you have a good heartbeat and then relax a litle and then call it a viable pregnancy.   Just be guarded....you have a high chance of miscarrying in your 40s.  I think there are just two or three women who are over 42 and are pregnant past their first trimester on this forum.  I'm one of them, but I don't technically count.

Congrats. Your progesterone looks wonderful and so does your HCG for being newly pregnant.  Your second set of numbers is going to tell you alot about how the pregnancy is going.

The levels are indicative of a viable pregnancy and melimeli is right, too!  The numbers doubling is much more important than where the numbers start out!  Your prog. level is wonderful!

Congrats and wishing you a happy and healthy nine months!
