Question for those told you would be having a big baby - before you gave birth

I am 33 weeks, however I went for an u/s at 31 weeks and they told me my baby was 4lbs 8oz.  Everything also measured 2 weeks ahead.  Well I went for my follow up appointment with the doctor today and he said that I am going to have a big baby.  He said that the u/s's are pretty accurate at this point in pregnancy, but closer to delivery is when they can be off.  Anyways, he discussed the possibility of me having to have a c-section - just depending on how the baby is positioned and if I have room to get her out.  He did say though that he would leave the decision up to me but that he would give me his honest opinion while in labor.  He also told me that since the baby measures 2 weeks ahead it would be nice if I would deliver 2 weeks early because if I go full term the baby will be even bigger (he's estimating 9-10lbs).  So my question is, has anyone been told they would have a big baby but that wasn't the case? Also, has anyone been recommended a c-section while in labor for the same reasons as my doctor said, but went on to deliver vaginally? I'm just trying to get some input because I don't want to NOT listen to him, yet I want to be prepared as to how I should approach the possibility.  Thanks for any input.

Here is my story...

My baby always measured big, from day 1... at 40 weeks we had an u/s to check position and he was measured at 10 pounds 5 ounces!! I reeeeally didnt want a c-section, and I knew u/s could be way off, so I asked about an induction. My doctor *strongly* advised against it because labor had not started at ALL (no dilation or even effacement... baby hadnt even dropped!!), and recommended a c-section... but I insisted on trying to deliver vaginally. We set the induction date for a week later...went home....but I couldn't shake this nagging feeling that I'd made the wrong decision. That my baby wasnt meant to come out vaginally. Which was a bummer b/c thats what I'd always wanted..took classes and had a doula, the whole nine. I called the next morning and set a date for a c-section. I immediately felt better, and confident in my decision despite it being the furthest thing from what I wanted. Hard to explain! My beautiful, healthy baby boy was born weighing 11 LBS 1 OZ!! As soon as she pulled the baby out my docor said "wow, you really made the right decision. He's verybig, and was nowhere near your cervix! Would have never came out the other way..." And it was true!

Thats how it went for me, and of course we're all different... but the moral of the story is listen to your instincts!!! I did, and I'm SO glad. It was a difficult call to make but I'm glad I did. Just follow your heart and everything will turn out fine. Best wishes!!

ok i also disagree here my boys were both over 10lb and no probs delivering vaginally! there is no reason you cant too :) as someone else said its not that acurate it can vary up to a lb or sometimes more from the drs guess, i wouldnt worry about it just go with it and only have a c-section if its really nesesary or that what you want to do dont let the dr push you into it, i know lots of people who have had 11 lb babies and were fine! yet you can have a 7lb baby and not be so fine its all on the angels and way the baby is positioned etc please dont stress and tell the dr you want to at least try vaginal if thats what u want, he may just want to push for c-section after all it saves him time and worry!
be strong xx

That is a tricky situation,
I was told that my son would only be only a little over 8 pounds but I knew diffrent because I was huge lol Neways I was induced at 39 weeks and my son weighed 9 pounds and 7 ounces I did try to have him vaginaly but he was to big so I had to have a c-section. I personally think to save yourself some hurting as far as going into labor and etc if you schedule a c-section at least you know when your baby is going to be there and etc, I already know that when I have another one it will be a c-section but it is up to you I wanted to have my son vaginaly but he was just way to big it is up to u!

A friend of mine was told to deliver early because her baby was going to be huge. Her baby was 6 lbs and some ounces (I forget how many ounces, it was a few years ago)!!! That is SMALL! The reason she delivered early, though, was because her doctor was going on vacation and the doctor didn't do an ultrasound to determine baby's size.

It's hard to know/guess how big a baby will or will not be. I knew my 2nd daughter was going to be larger and she was 8 1/2 lbs. But that was because I felt that in my heart, not because of anyone's measurements.

I say deliver 1-2 weeks early vaginally. Don't opt for c-section but do go in prepared that he might do one. All you can do is try to deliver vaginally!

my sister in law was induced at 38 weeks b/c they said her baby was already over 8.5 pounds. They also said his head was in the 98th percentile...aka a big head.
Easton was 7 pounds 11 ounces with a completly normal sized head.

My brothers girlfreind was induced at 38 weeks b/c they said the baby was around 5 pounds and they thought the placenta wasnt working properly, they had the nerve to ask my soon to be sil if she had down syndrome in the family ( its not even heriditary!!) anways after 2 days of stress, she deliverd a 7 pound healthy baby girl. Annabelle was released from the hospital 6 hours after being born, even before mom!

sooooo. ultrasounds can be wrong!!

Thanks for all your input.  I definitely don't plan on "planning to have a c-section" and hope that it doesn't result in that.  I will just try and see how things go.  The doctor did emphasize that though he will be honest with me if he thinks I won't be able to deliver vaginally (due to size or babies position), he will also leave it up to me.  Obviously if the baby is in distress I will do what is best, but I will be doing whatever I can to deliver the baby vaginally.

My baby was 8lb7oz and I was also told that I would have a large baby.  I delivered vaginally with only 1 stitch and a 1 hr labor.  C-Sections have so much recovery time.

But the decision is up to you and your Doctor.

I think that you should try to deliver this baby naturally.  While youa re in labor it will be easier to know if you will need a c-section or not. If you decide to deliver ahead and schedule a c-section, your chances of delivering another baby vaginally are rduced.  Leave it up to nature to decide.

I would also "see how it goes" and try the for the Vaginal delivery.... Women delivery Healthy big babies without any problems everyday! With my first the dr told me that I was going to be having a 9 pound baby..... well she was barely 6 lbs LOL so i think any ultra sound after the first trimester is kinda a guess! like LauraB said

I was told my baby would be over 10 lbs. and I measured 4 weeks ahead, but my baby was only 7 lb. 8 oz. -- not that large.  I did have a c-section after many hours of labor, but it had nothing to do with the baby's size (obviously).  I have also known very petite women who have naturally delivered babies that are in the 13 pound range.

If it were me, I would plan to shoot for a vaginal delivery, and believe that you can deliver a large baby.  I really think that the mental battle is the most important fight to win when you are told you are having a large baby.  I think that played the biggest role in me requiring a c-section.  You can always change your mind if it looks like things aren't happening.

I wouldn't go by what the doctor said.  Some doctors love to push c-sections.  My best friend was told her son was already 7 lbs. and she still had a few weeks to go, when she gave birth her son was only 5 lbs.  Now personally, I had a big baby.  He was 9 lbs. 2 oz and 21 1/4 in. long at birth.  I knew I was having a big baby, but he was also a week overdue.  I pushed him out, needed to be cut just once and that was that.  I would think it through very carefully, there are plenty of women on here who were able to naturally give birth to a big baby.

I don't know what to tell you. =(

My Dr. said that u/s measurements (especially after the 1st trimester) are TOTALLY a GUESS... I would probably just wait and see what happens.. But it is such a personal decision!! Good luck and keep us posted!!
