This thread is now closed. I think everyone knows that smoking is bad for your health, and has proven to be detrimental to babies. We are happy that everyone's babies are born healthy, but that isn't always the case.

It is also never appropriate to insult another member, ever. If a topic bothers you, please don't respond.

I suffer from major depression disorder and panic disorder it got really bad when my son passed away in 2011 so i picked up on the smoking but i wasnt smoking while pregnant. i will not sit here and call any women selfish or a bad mom because why be disrespectful when you dont know what its like it very hard to stop and it does help with stress and the longer you have beeb smoking the harder it is to quit. Im now 19+5 and i do not smoke because i rather suffer with my depression and panic attacks instead of possible hurting my should it did take me a while to quit but atleast i finally did. Everyone has a right to come on here and share their thoughts but i dont thinks its right for anyone to be rude about it!

Lol krizmart! I just hope people understand that smoking is a choice that they do rightfully have to make. But I'm pretty sure the baby isn't choosing to smoke. And that's not right that it should suffer

It's almost like the struggle is just SO hard that its not worth my baby's life. Are you kidding me people? What bothers me most is people who think because they keep getting away healthy that its okay to do. Yes, let's basically teach our kids that it doesn't matter if something can kill you, if you don't die the first time, you can do it again! Aghhh... Blood boiling. How does it make any scientific or even common sense to say "no, something that causes cancer and death is not proven to hurt my baby during pregnancy" does that even make sense? How could it not? Lord ladies we can't even drink a bunch of caffeine while pregnant! Of course smoking isn't okay!

my husband suffers from depression, he doesn't smoke.. I have went through some of the worst stress a person can go through, I've had a ROUGH few years... I don't think that's an excuse, there are healthy ways to handle stress, I think it's great that you're trying to quit, I really hope you can, everyone deserves a long healthy life.

I do not smoke nor will I allow someone who smokes around my unborn child and children.
I have family members who gave it up to be in my children's lives.
If you smell like an ash tray your not going to be invited in my home.
Its a life choice your making and I will not let it second handily affect my children or myself.

so youre saying its safer to smoke while pregnant than not? everyone has everyday ********, i know i do, but i handle it, never had a cigarette in my life. i have more respect for myself and children than that to die prematurely. your comparing apples and oranges from hair dye and cigarette smoke inhalation.

My friend quit smoking for 1 out of her 4 pregnancys and the one she did quit her baby was born mentaly retarde. Likely caused from the extra stress she was under not just from quiting but from everyday life bull****. There is no proof that smoking does any harm to the baby it may stunt the babys growth but that's about it. People are so quick to judge when they see a pregnant woman smoke what about the ones who inhale chemicals feom dying their hair or getting their nails done every other week.

just because they are healthy at birth doesnt mean they will be for life, my mom smoked with my sisters and I. I developed asthma around 3-4, no history at all of asthma in our family, doctor said it's likely linked to my moms smoking. My other sister had sids, she stopped breathing and thank god they caught her not breathing or she would've died..she was on a heart monitor until she was 18 months..again likely from smoking.. There is no evidence proving anything because no one is willing to risk the health or life of their child. If god forbid your child has an issue that MAY be linked to smoking, you would blame yourself for life..my kids started this world healthy, and I don't intend on changing that..they will not be at risk for anything i can prevent.

Withdrawal is bad for your baby. But what do you think your baby goes through after birth? Now you have a baby that is sometimes inconsolable because it is going through withdrawal due to that fact its been getting nicotine for nine months and at birth it just stops. Are you going to give your newborn that cigarette that its crying for? So dont give it to your baby in the womb.

I was only 19 when I got pregnant with my 1st child (this was 13yrs ago) and smoked my entire pregnancy. My boy is healthy and I continued to smoke. Thank God I have been able to quit smoking for this pregnancy. I feel much better about it and my lungs feel so much better. I hope to never go back to smoking

No need for rude comments!!!!!! Anyways smoking is just like any other addictions......yes people who smoke its not just a thing they do its an addiction and like any other when you quit. You have withdrawals ......and your baby will also suffer the withdrawal so quitting cold turkey isn't the best you need to either ween yourself off or just cut way way back

Im 10 weeks and I still smoke.. I always thought if i fell pregnant id stop right away but its hard, ive cut down... I do feel bad but i hate when friends say 'Oh my god your still smoking!?'.. It makes me feel worse.. I know its not good for my baby and id stop completley if I could.. Its not like I want to hurt my baby but its so hard to just stop.. I hope I can give them up soon. Ive heard of lots of moms smoking during pregnancy and their babys were fine :) Im not saying its ok but its just hard for some people to stop.. Maybe your friend is just stressed and needs one from time to time, dont worry I bet her baby will be just fine :)

No amount has been proven safe . There is nothing showing any amount of alcohol or smoking is safe thats what I meant

I smoked during my pregnancies my babies are prefectly healthy. They're super smart.  My daughter is 2, speaks in full sentences, knows more about how to work a computer, ps3, and smart phone than my friends 3 & 4 year olds, sings her abc's, can count up to 20 in english and spanish :) My son is 1. He says mom, dad, mum-mum (food) and botcha (bath). He also plays patty cake and itsy bitsy spider. They both don't have any respiratory problems. What im trying to get at is that don't believe everything you hear. There are babies who come out with mental retardation, deformed or missing body parts, still born etc.. to women who are perfectly healthy. I believe that if it happens it happens. God has plans for all of us.

I think it's a bit hypocritical to say "no amount is safe because its not proven" lol not being rude just saying that comment technically makes no sense, but personally I think moderation is key, clearly there are sideffects if your gonna smoke a few packs a day and drink like an Irish bar made but if you keep it to a minimum then it should be fine for the most part. Like caffeine, smoking, drinking wine, tanning ect... Everyone says not to do it I think to prevent people from going overboard
