My son was jaundiced for a while after he was born but they didn't take him away from me... an isolette was brought to my room that had bili lights in it, and when he didn't take to that very well they brought a blanket embedded with bili lights so I could wrap him in it and he could get the right treatment while I was holding him and nursing him. Ask your nurses if they have those options so your baby can stay with you. If not, you should be able to visit in the NICU.

Just means ur guys blood isnt compatible people can have different blood types an be fine.
Excess bilirubin (hyperbilirubinemia) is the main cause of jaundice. Bilirubin, which is responsible for the yellow color of jaundice, is a normal part of the pigment released from the breakdown of "used" red blood cells.

Normally, the liver filters bilirubin from the bloodstream and releases it into the intestinal tract. A newborn's immature liver often can't remove bilirubin quickly enough, causing an excess of bilirubin. Jaundice due to these normal newborn conditions is called physiologic jaundice, and it typically appears on the second or third day of life.

Other causes

An underlying disorder may cause jaundice. In these cases, jaundice often appears much earlier or much later than physiologic jaundice. Diseases or conditions that can cause jaundice include:

Internal bleeding (hemorrhage)An infection in your baby's blood (sepsis)Other viral or bacterial infectionsAn incompatibility between the mother's blood and the baby's bloodAn enzyme deficiencyAn abnormality of your baby's red blood cells that causes them to break

Jaundice has nothing to do with blood type. I have the same blood as my mother yet I had jaundice so bad they didn't think I was going to make it. I didn't get to stay in the same hospital as my mom they rushed me to rainbows an babies childrens hospital for better care.

I know this post is old but I would just like to adD
about jaundice.  Both of my children had it. Its actually the liver which is what ccauses  the yellowing of the skin/ eyes. I do apologize but it does not have anything do do with blood type. I didn't have to Google the infomation . Because my children had it. But it's no biggy.  They are normal & healthy!!! Ohh and for the record,  none of my brothers or sisters including my self had it, and non of us have the same  blood type as our mother. But I hope your doing better a year later!

To Chloegc1023 and mellyn717 first of all both of Yall pissing me the hell off.. you really need to shut up.. I have enough on mind you really need to do your own research before you coming on my post like you two are some master degree doctors and gonna tell me about my child if you was smart you would have kept your stupid comments to yourself... There are manyn types of jaundice so you really need to have a seat somewhere and be quiet.. my child have SPECIALISTS looking after her.. and you gonna tell me what jaundice is really girls bye... If you was smart enough when I told you her case you should have looked it up on your own instead of coming back on here typing foolishness.. and you mellyn717 ok you and your mom have diff blood type but you had jaundice oh okay you had a different type.. don't comment on my post with foolishness that you obviously know nothing about... And thanks to all the other ladies sending best wishes...

The only cause is not blood type my daughter had jaundice and we have the exact same blood type. But it can be cause by blood type and no one should be arguing with the lady who just had a baby and can't see it constantly due to a medical condition that has been explained to her. I am sure they told her why they think her baby is jaundiced and if it was a normal mild case she would have her baby now.

Congratulations skittles and hope baby clears up fast so you can take her home with you. I could not imagine the possibility of not taking baby home. Maybe you two will get lucky and she clear up soon and stay the rest of your stay with you. I know you really want that baby in your arms.

Types of Jaundice
The most common types of jaundice are:

Physiological (normal) jaundice: occurring in most newborns, this mild jaundice is due to the immaturity of the baby's liver, which leads to a slow processing of bilirubin. It generally appears at 2 to 4 days of age and disappears by 1 to 2 weeks of age.

Jaundice of prematurity: occurs frequently in premature babies since they are even less ready to excrete bilirubin effectively. Jaundice in premature babies needs to be treated at a lower bilirubin level than in full term babies in order to avoid complications.

Breastfeeding jaundice: jaundice can occur when a breastfeeding baby is not getting enough breast milk because of difficulty with breastfeeding or because the mother's milk isn’t in yet. This is not caused by a problem with the breast milk itself, but by the baby not getting enough to drink.

Breast milk jaundice: in 1% to 2% of breastfed babies, jaundice may be caused by substances produced in their mother's breast milk that can cause the bilirubin level to rise. These can prevent the excretion of bilirubin through the intestines. It starts after the first 3 to 5 days and slowly improves over 3 to 12 weeks.

Blood group incompatibility (Rh or ABO problems): if a baby has a different blood type than the mother, the mother might produce antibodies that destroy the infant's red blood cells. This creates a sudden buildup of bilirubin in the baby's blood. Incompatibility jaundice can begin as early as the first day of life. Rh problems once caused the most severe form of jaundice, but now can be prevented with an injection of Rh immune globulin to the mother within 72 hours after delivery, which prevents her from forming antibodies that might endanger any subsequent babies.

alittle education for everyone! i was about to comment about it having nothing to do with blood type but then i did some research because i am not an expert. And your baby can obviously have a different blood type then you because the father can have a different blood type then you.

you'll be holding your baby and heading home soon! congrats!

It happens cuz bilirubin builds up in the blood causing the yellow discoloration.  My son had it mildly when he was first born and I brought him home cuz it wasn't bad.  But then he wasn't going poo poo and then finally after a visit to the ER cuz the drs thought he was dehydrated, he finally went poo poo after we supplemented with formula and he excreted all the extra bilirubin in his system and his jaundice finally went away.  It was scary at the time, but everything turned out okay. Don't get scared if u see ur babies poop look seedy, that's the bilirubin coming out.  All will be well.  Don't worry too much..

Congratulations on your baby girl. My son had jaundice when he was born, they let him stay in the room with me and would come get him for light therapy and he had to have a special blanket for him while he was under the light.
She'll be in your arms soon I know it must suc k when you been looking forward to holding her for so long.

To all the other moms please don't debate about what causes jaundice, just look it up and learn more about it. You will find that there is more to it then what you thought you knew.

Mostly all babies get jaundice to some degree when they're born and they're usually better by the time u leave.  Also having jaudince has nothing to do with blood type.  So try not to worry, ull likely go home with baby..

I know you are sad but I'm sure she is in good hands. Take it from an old pro use this time to rest because once she gets home there won't be any nurses there to help and newborns take a lot of energy especially at a time when you are not going to have much energy

Awe my son had a little jaundice after he was born, but not enough for them to keep him from me. At least it's nothing too serious. She will need lots of natural light. I can only imagine how you feel. I hope she goes home with you! ♡ :)
