sleeping on left side

How important is it that we sleep on our left side? Does that start at the beginning of pregnancy or just once the baby is bigger? I've always hated sleeping on my left side, but I'm trying to get used to it.

Laying on the left side allows better blood flow to the placenta and back to your heart. Either side is better than flat on your back but if you are still in the first trimester you could lay on your tummy. It's not that important until your uterus and the baby is bigger and can actually compress the vena cava.

Maybe it's because I'm left handed but I usually sleep on my left side or my tummy, I'll switch sides a few times but it's mostly my left

I'm 7 weeks and I've been having a horrible time getting to sleep. I started doing the whole left side sleeping thing (with like 3 pillows to support me) and it's been helping. I'm normally a tummy sleeper or on my right side.

I can't lay on my left side due to my hip bothering me if I lay on it to long.  I was a stomach and back sleeper before I got pregnant but now I just try to get comfy. But I have read sleeping in your left helps blood flow and cuts down on heartburn.

I think sleeping to the left is just more helpful, so it gets recommended most.
I fall asleep on my right side, flip back and forth all night, wake up on my back a few times, etc.
I've never been comfortable on my stomach so I don't have to miss out on that. I've also never been comfortable on my back, but have always woken up on it and put myself back up onto my side.
I don't think it's really too much of a big deal, especially if your baby likes to kick you around, and you'll probably be moving all over the place.

Its funny we all do that. I dont think its natural to sleep on the left side as everyone sleeps on their back, tummy, or right side. I think the most important part of sleep while pregnant is to be as comfortable as possible to get as much sleep as possible.
