I didn't go with my first and not going with this one either.
I never went either and everything was fine. The only one I wish I would had is the breastfeeding one.
I took the birthing class. It was super long but it was for one day. Otherwise we'd have to take the class in sessions. The class only costed us $35 at our hospital. Aside from breathing practices, we learned the anatomy, phases, and stages as far as what to expect. They talked about decisions on circumcisions for baby boys, epidural and other different pain relievers that we have available showed us the different type of birth positions, and we've even watched videos of moms giving births in different ways (water, natural, cesarean, etc.). They talked about episiotomy, fetal positions. All in all there was just a lot to cover and I thought I learned a lot in those 4 hours (we also had free lunch provided). Most importantly. They discussed supporting roles for the daddies, how they should expect to help you during labor, what to expect from you--like their chances of handling you yelling at him, etc. I also read the What to Expect When You're Expecting book, and that pretty much covers the same amount of details the class provided.
Thank you. That makes me feel better. When you start reading a bunch of books and what not, it's enough to create doubt. :-)
I'm 37 weeks and haven't gone to one! I figure, women have been doing this for thousands of years, and for the majority of that time, there were no childbirth classes! Our bodies will know what to do! :)
I went with my first and it's nice to know the anatomy and physiology of labor, but I threw all techniques out the window when it was go time. I did not find them helpful, personally. I'm sure it's very beneficial for some women, depends on the mother, I suppose.
I haven't gone to one and I'm 26 weeks with my 3rd. I survived.
