cloth vs disposal

So my husband and I are having the great cloth vs disposable diapers debate. There is a company where we live that will give u all the cloth diapers u need plus the diaper covers. They come to your house once a week and take all the used diapers away and resupply u with clean ones. They wash them for u and bring them back. It's 25$ a week for this service. This is our first child and we have no idea if the money is worth it, we don't know how many diapers babies normally go through. Just trying to find the cheapest route. And we don't know a lot of pros and cons on cloth vs disposable either.

Also, make sure you look up the ingredients in disposable diapers.  Nowadays they are filled with these gel expanding beads that are loadedwith harmful chemicals. Some brands make disposables that are safer and less toxic.

We are doing cloth diapers.  Flats & prefolds for newborn & AIOs later on (we got some bum genius & some handmade ones on etsy jojoscrackercloth I think)

anyway... we will be washing them ourselves.  I personally would not trust the detergents that a company would use.  Especially if they are using clorox to bleach them. Soo bad for baby's skin.

So, for us, it's about $150 upfront for all the diapers we have and then just detergent to wash.... definitely a cheaper option.  Plus there is no trash service where I live so I am not about to burn a bunch of used diapers... can you imagine? yuck. Lol

I think it depends on your child and the brand of diapers he/she can wear. My son went through $80 or more of diapers every month for the first year. With my daughter we used luvs. She didn't have nearly as many blow outs. Therefore we only spent maybe $40-60 a month. With disposables you also have to factor in finding the brand that wont leave your kid with a rash. This is my third child and I'm cloth diapering. I spent 230 on my cloth diapers. I'm washing them myself.

We go to Costco for diapers and they are $40 and last us almost 2 months. $25 a week is definitely not more cost effective. My sister in law uses the cloth ones  and loves them because her little girl would wet through the disposable ones a lot quicker than the cloth ones. But they wash the diapers themselves.

Well...I have never used cloth for any of my kids so I can't bash or praise it em...but with my kids each one year apart when they were newborns I went thru more diapers the older they get the less they go thru...since my kids hit like size 2diapers if not a little sooner (which trust me they will move thru the sizes pretty quick) I have spent about 40$ at most a month on diapers each child.... buying in bulk if you go with disposables is the cheapest way to go. The little packs are good in a pinch but just grabbing a big box is much more cost effective. Which ever you chose I'm sure baby will do just great :) good luck and happy comparing

Im personally doing cloth with my first :) It's a little costly upfront but in the longrun saves you quite a bit! Plus its safer for the babys bottom. I just didnt feel comfy with the chemicals most diapers have in them. Ill never judge anyone should they choose disposable, but its the choice hubby and I made with our little one :) Less rashes. And its awesome there's a service that does the washes for you! Im in Germany and will be washing all mine myself. But I really feel its worth it!

I spend about $25 a week on disposable diapers so to me that service would be more for the environment than cost savings. If you washed them yourself it would save tons of money but that's a lot of extra work that most new mom's don't want. I'm on my fourth baby and thinking of doing cloth during the day and disposable at night to save money.

My 1st I did disposable diapers. U will go through A LOT of diapers. It's very expensive. I can't honestly say cloth diapers are that much more cost effective, but I have a friend that used cloth & she loved it. So I am going to try them this time around.
