Have any of you been referred to a fetal medicin specialist?  What can I expect?  Should I be worried?

Did any of you ladies have your daring scan done at the MFM? I am having mine in 2 weeks and was told it is extremely detailed and will take quite a while. Is it done by the doctor?  Will I know right then if something is wrong?

Thanks for all the support and encouragement ladies. As a first time mom it's so scary hearing high risk and complications  I have been thinking about it and it will be nice to be able to see baby more and know what's going on all the time!

I work for MFM and I often see patients with your medical issues. The babies are almost always fine. No worries. Conditions that most often cause prenatal complications are high blood pressure and gestational diabetes. Thyroid dysfunction rarely is an issue as long as your labs are normal.

I am also labeled high risk and I go to a maternal fetal specialist in my hospital. I have a heart condition, and had a miscarriage just last year so my obgyn scheduled me as soon as I received positive pregnancy results.
Currently I'm 38 weeks, at first I went every 4 weeks a day had ultra sounds done. Now I go every week and have bio-physical ultra sounds. I'm very happy with it because I know what's happening with my son every step of the way. I've basically watched him grow inside me the whole pregnancy!
I understand you may be a bit worried, just know it's all worth it. I pray the staff is as wonderful as mine and provide answers to all your questions for the duration of your pregnancy.

I have been seeing maternal fetal specialist at a childrens hospital near me. I have had 2 misscarraiges high blood pressure, hassimotos, depression an a few other concerns for drs that make me high risk. I love it! I have an ultrasound every 4wks an highly skilled drs an techs following my health an the health of my baby I am almost 27wks. Dont worry its better to see them an be over cautious then ignore any concerns.

There is nothing wrong being labeled high risk. I am high risk due to a heart condition I have. They pay more attention to you and the babies growth and you recieve tons of ultrasound pictures. And there are no surprises during delivery or birth because they been watching you from 20 weeks on. Good luck either way!!! Happy Pregnancy

I was due to a medication that I have to take. But there are other reasons to see one, such as maybe something that came up on labs, medications, history of possible illness that would affect the baby. They just go over your family history and do a detailed ultrasound to ensure everything is okay.
