How do you know if you lost your mucus plug?

I actually lost mine yesterday! It was gross this is my 3rd and the first time I have actually seen the mucus plug. It was a yellowish color and I couldn't even wipe it off I had to pull it out because it was so thick! And I did not have any bloody show in it. But it reminded me of gak maybe a tad bit thinner. Talk about barf!!! Lol.... I'm 37+3 and dilated to a 5 and fully thinned but not much pain so hopefully by tonight my princess will find her way out

You don't always know when you do. I didn't know with my last two pregnancies. I asked my Dr one time and he said oh its been gone lol

For me, if you don't mind a lil TMI lol, the day before I went into labor I wiped after I peed that morning and it was like a big greyish wad of snot with  a tinge of red. Even though I had a lot of discharge during the pregnancy, this was very different and noticeable.
