how do you know if your water broke?

I'm 36 weeks and 2 days, how do I know if my water broke?  I've been told it's not like the movies and it doesn't gush out, just little at a time
.. and if it does break how close normally is labor?

Well, lots of times it is a gush, sometimes it just feels like you are slightly peeing on yourself and you soak your undies several times. You should be in full labor by then. Lots of women's waters never break, doc broke mine right before pushing phase.

It can be a gush or a trickle, more than peeing youself tho. It just keeps coming. Dr broke my water with my daughter tho, so i havent experienced that yet.

It's different for each woman. Some have a large gush, others a slow leak and some small gushes of fluid.Amniotic fluid should be clear and odorless. If it smells like amonia than you are leaking urine. If it stops when you try levels it's urine. If it keeps coming it's amniotic fluid. Also if it's brown or green it can mean the baby passed it's first stool and your provider needs to know. In any case if you suspect your water has broke you need to contact your provider.

Alid32 said it best. The only thing I will add is you can break your water and not be in labor. It's called premature rupture or membranes.  Since you are only 36 weeks I would call the dr if you think your water may have broken. (I'm a L&D nurse)

I had prom with my last at 36 weeks. Baby was born with pneumonia and jaundice and put in nice for a week. Also they had to induce me 14 hours later because I never went into labour on my own. No fun. Also if I may add your water is not fully clear. It has milky white specks throughout it - vernix off babes, but op was correct it is order less.

The mucus could be your mucus plug. That's not as concerning as the water breaking. Keep us updated:)

So an update,  I have such a small frame that know he is facing down I'm experiencing a lot of pain. My hips need to be adjusted but the chiro, I have carpal tunnel in both hands, and I'm most likely just losing my mucus plug. She doesn't want to check my cervix till 37 weeks aka next appointment on the 23rd, she did do an ultrasound sound for me and is estimating about 4 to 5 lbs but his heart rate is 140s which normally it's 140 to 150 so I'm a lot more comfortable knowing all this.
