Foetal alcohol syndrome

Has anyone had a child that was born with it? What exactly is it? And are any of you having the occasional drink?
I have been told by docs in moderation is perfectly fine... Others look in disgust if I say a had a simple glass of red with dinner or a beer after work on a Friday!

Shalane - if your mother in law truly drank 3 small glasses of wine in her pregnancy and no other alcohol,  your husband doesn't have FAS. It's really that clear.  He may have some other kind of learning disability or genetic disorder.

And here,  your mother in law has carried this guilt that 3 glasses of wine during her entire pregnancy has damaged her son.  That's not the case.

To help you understand the risks,  here's a medical journal article.  Out of 400,000 pregnant women studied,  zero of them had babies with FAS with fewer than 8.5 drinks per week.

Three glasses of wine,  in an entire pregnancy,  will simply not affect the baby.

Absolutely wyattsmom!
I eat fantastically well and love to cook fresh!
I am finding the responses amusing now! Especially using religion to defend a point! Haha!!
Some of you need to try having a drink to loosen the hell up! Relax, I just posed a question, I'm not forcing any opinions so why are u?
I shall update in a few short weeks when I have my son and confirm either way whether I have harmed my child or not by having a couple of drinks.
Sassymommy, exactly the point I was making earlier!
Good luck to all of you with your pregnancies and families.

I am sorry you are getting such unhelpful responses. Some people have only a need to make themselves feel superior to others like they are better than someone else. You can not ask questions on here and expect helpful and supportive advise/responses. Bottom line just do what you yourself think is right for you and your baby. If you want to relax with a drink then do so and you do not have to feel bad for it.

They will never listen, with all the processed food with chemicals that they have no idea the effect they have on people or a growing baby. These women think it is ok to put that into their bodies with a baby absorbing these chemicals. it really is crazy how judgmental and hypocritical people could be.

In the Caribbean  women drink all the time and there foods are not as processed  as in the America and I have never met or went to school  with any child that have FAs...and they don't even consume wine they consume strong liquor...people love passing judgment  on this site when they themselves  are not even doctors, they only go by what they read on the Internet. ..but hey to each his own

Everyone tells lies no matter how Christian. I am a Christian and have read just about all of the bible and can quote parts of it. I try to apply it the best I can to my life, I am human and am not perfect. It is absolutely inpossible for any human to be perfect, we are born in sin and sin by nature. If someone says they do not lie, its a lie. There are certain things that no matter how hard you try and think lieing is wrong you will lie about. I pride my self on not telling lies but to have a good peace of mind I could not say that I do not or under some conditions lie. I know it is sinful to have pride but as I said I am only human.

You just said that babies back when they did not take vitamins were healthier. Well there was not very much processed food and homemade medications with alcohol. Drs don't advise on old homemade medications made with alcohol. Trust me the medications made by people who can not afford to go to a dr had more than small amounts of alcohol. My grandmother made them for me when I was a child, she said they were healthier than the ones prescribed by drs. That is one of the reasons I don't drink because of the taste and the memories of the taste of the medicine. I was raised the old fashioned way and sorry you don't have more education on the matter other than what is said in a general manner on the subject that any alcohol is bad during pregnancy. But lots of women when babies were healthier as you said took in alcohol and more than what would be in a small glass of wine. I am not saying that alcohol should be taken in during pregnancy, I am saying that a woman should not be called selfish or judged for doing something you have no proof will hurt their baby. NO ONE HAS PROOF THAT ONE GLASS OF WINE OR ONE BEER WILL HURT A GROWING BABY.  Studies say it is doubtful that one drink will hurt a baby but it is advised to be avoided due to the fact that everyone processes alcohol differently and people are not honest when questioned about drinking habits, to have a amount that is safe.

Women think because they drink in moderation it makes it "okay". Right keep telling yourself that.
I don't know why waiting three months is such a big deal..its not even a full year people. But to each its own. Its not my problem just my strong opinion

My mother in law is a Christian woman and does not lie. If she says she drank three glasses she drank only three. It is roulette and it's extremely irresponsible.  Drinking is no different than smoking

I'm with you wyattsmom.
Some European cultures don't think twice about having a vino while preggers. I believe  they have one of the lowest birth defect rates.
I'm not looking for approval to have a drink, if I feel like one I'll have one. I trust myself and my decisions. I'm not looking to get smashed! I just enjoy a quiet drink after a hard day or when enjoying a meal with my family !

What point? The only point your tryna make is alcohol being ok to take while pregnant and its not! Medicine has a small amount of alcohol in it along with other ingredients shouldn't intake. Which is why dr.s don't suggest we take any while pregnant! & alot of women don't know what processed food can do there babys. But a mom instaking
alcohol does!

Way back when there was not as much processed food and yes babies were healthier. Now days with the increase of processed foods there is also an increase in cancer and other illnesses. So yes I can compare to two. Also way back when they used alcohol as medicine, My grandmother had home remidies for almost everything that was used by a large number of people that included alcohol. Guess what even pregnant women used them and children. And yes you are right the babies were healthier. They did not need vitamins they had healthy foods and medicine made with alcohol... I think you just helped me prove part of my point.

You can't compare food to alcohol. You just can't. Food isn't harmful. Just fattening. You can't speak for every mom. And even though i believe in taking my vitamins how about all the moms who didnt have that type of stuff way back then? Babys can come out perfectly healthy even without taking the vitamins.&Id rather down caffeine everyday(which i don't)then absorb alcohol into my body.

Some people are very easily convinced that there is only one way to do something. It seems to be useless trying to tell them they should be less judgmental to people who do not think that way.

This is a little off topic but what gets me are people saying a glass of wine is horrible but if a woman drinks nothing but soda during pregnancy no one say they are selfish. What about the women who eat nothing but fast food and processed food during pregnancy and don't take their vitamins.  I have seen people I know deliver unhealthy babies due to nutritional issues and one friend had gd and ate lots of processed food to have a very large baby. The baby was a unhealthy weight at birth now she feeds the child like she eats and gives the child no vitamins, the poor child is one year old and in 4-5t clothing. No one has ever questioned her parenting or says she was being selfish or lazy for not taking more time to care about the health of her child. I see more risky and selfish behavior than just a glass of wine by pregnant women and parents. Whats more selfish then not even making sure you eat right or take a little vitamin. I guess I can expect to see just as much of a argument from yall when people are talking about not wanting to take their vitamin or on these food comments that talk about them eating unhealthy foods also because of the preventable damage they may do to there child. I know the dangers of alcohol because my husbands mom was a heavy drinker and drug user, you can imagine the damage she did to him and I live with it everyday. He can't even read the kids a bedtime story or really comprehend a conversation. It is disgusting what she did to him and it was not from one drink, it was from very heavy drinking. There may not be a proven fact about if a drink will hurt a growing baby but there is no proven fact that one drink will hurt a baby. so, be as judgmental as you would like but remember what goes around comes around and that is a proven fact.

I think people wait on post like this to let the judgement posts flood in.. my mother drank strong Caribbean  rum weekly while pregnant, I have no issues  have masters in economics...my sisters all drank Caribbean rum, beer and weekly  and all their kids are fine a+ students.

My doctor  wife is pregnant  and he said she drinks a glass of wine 2x a week and this is there 4th child.

To call someone  self fish is ridiculous,  because  I'm sure  no one loves that child more than the mother that is carrying  it.

I wasn't necessarily passing judgement on you,  Taz.

I was specifically thinking of my SIL,  who sat there and pounded Long Island Ice Teas one Christmas eve when she was 6 months pregnant.  We all wanted to deck her.  I don't know for sure,  but it seems to me her son is lightly brushed with FAS.
