shoulder dystocia

My first baby got her shoulder stuck on the way out and the doctors had to tear me pretty badly to get her out. They just told me that this time will likely be worse and I'm having a boy so he may be even bigger (DD was 8lb9oz). Has anyone had a delivery without complications after one with dystocia?

Update-apparently my daughter was only stuck for about a minute (anything more than 5 minutes can cause fetal death) and it was minor. But they said that it's usually an issue of mom's pelvis size and baby size so it will likely happen again. I have an ultrasound booked for 2 weeks from now to see what baby's size is like. We will probably have to induce at 37-38 weeks if he's more than 4lbs already.

@Becca thanks. I just worry because I have a 15 month old who is very active (high-needs energetic child) and I can never sit still very long with her. I'm a homemaker so I'm all she's got. Getting up over and over all day long to chase after her would not be good for healing from a c section so I want to avoid it at all costs. :( it's just frustrating not knowing.

Also drink red raspberry leaf tea to shorten your labor and intensify your contractions without artificial help. I'm a FTM and I researched it and drink a fresh brewed cup of my leaf tea everyday. It regulates me, gives me that extra boost of calcium I need. It's a green tea and it smells and tastes yummy with hunny

All i can say is c sections arnt that bad. I didnt wanna have to have one but my baby who was also 8'9 was stuck and then had to do a c section. But this time around im gunna try for a natural delivery. Its really not that bad and yes the healing time may be a little longer but all in all its not terrible. I have had a lot of friends who took longer to heal from a natural birth then i did. But either way good luck. If your worried about a big baby try walking a lot including stairs about 4 weeks before your due date so you might be able to go into labor earlier then ur due date and you might have a smaller baby.

Thanks ladies. I think I will request an ultrasound around 36 weeks if my doctor will let me. Just so we know where to go from there. Turns out my daughter had a lot of risk factors for it (over 8lbs, was transverse during labour and needed to be turned, cord wrapped around her neck) and I had a long second stage of labour (at the hospital for 13 hours my water broke 2 hours before I got there), I had an epidural,AND they had to put me on pitocin because labour was going slowly and my contractions were intense and irregular. So I'm hoping if he's not transverse that it will fix a lot of the other problems as well. We just want to keep an eye on his weight. He was already measuring bigger than she was at 22 weeks. Thanks for the positive words. I will update after my next appointment on the 4th.

@growingbabyariel I'm surprised about that. I've never heard of any Dr allowing a c section just for not wanting to deal with labor pain. Maybe there were some other factors too. @jjolfert it's too bad they told you "this one will be worse" .. you don't need any additional stress! It might not be worse this time, maybe it will be better! Best of luck, I wish you a safe smooth delivery :)

I had shoulder dystocia with my first 2... my first wasn't so bad he was 7 lbs 4 oz but my second was 8 lb 3 oz and we almost lost her because of if... after that one with my 3rd the dr kept a watch on the baby's growth and by 9 months they were predicting her to be bigger so I opted for a c section... turns out she was only 7 lbs 13 oz but I would do it the same just to be sure she was safe coming out again... now I am pregnant with number 4 and I am planning on another section...

I'm also from Canada and when I talked to the Doctor about a possible section as I had broken my bottom a few years ago and was scared to do that again. She would also NOT let me schedule a section. You had to have had a high risk pregnancy or had a section before.

This time just be prepared, lots of vaginal massaging and stretching in the weeks/months before birth, different positions. Worst case it will be like the last and they will cut you again. Bring supplies to help you recover better this time, and won't hurt as much. Different pads, different clothes, ice packs, a spray bottle for afterward when going to the bathroom.

Best of luck, I'm sure this time will be smoother for you.

How big were you guys at birth? From my research so far birth weight is a huge factor. I didn't think my daughter was that big...

My sounder was stuck and dislocated when i was born. My mom had me naturally. She had 2 more children after me, all vaginally and naturally. No c sections. That was over 15 years ago

@growingbabyariel, your friend must me the minority because every OB I've talked to and my friends have talked to won't do a c section if it's not medically necessary.

C section seems worse to me too. I am just worried about complications. My daughter wasn't breathing when she came out and I had vaginal pain during intercourse for the following 6 months and that was with second degree tearing. I can't imagine how much worse it will be :( I was hoping someone had a positive second experience.

It's less likely to happen if your not flat on your back. Maybe try researching alternative birth positions. C sections seem worse to me..

That's weird. Why wouldn't they allow schedule CSection. What about high risk mothers? Its important to have a backup plan of birth, just in case.

In Canada they don't allow for scheduled c sections, only emergency or because the mother had a previous c section. I would honestly hate to heal from a c section more but I'm kind of freaked out.

Have you considered a c-section? That Might be easier.
