Sleeping positons

How important is it really to avoid sleeping on your back? Before I switched to my midwife, an OBGYN told me to avoid it after 17 to 18 weeks. I try to sleep on my sides, but it seems like it makes my hips hurt all day.

Is it really healthier for the baby to avoid lying flat on your back?  I'm 24.5 weeks.

I was told not to lie on your back because it cuts oxygen to the baby. . And if you must lie on your back to prop yourself up on some pillows....

Yeah you shouldn't lay on your back but there was times I couldn't help it and would fall asleep like that for a few hours my baby is perfectly healthy.  I know what you mean about the pain that's how I felt a body pillow seems to help out

My doc told me its not as big a deal as people make it out to be. While it isn't ideal its not detrimental either... I would never tell anybody to go against what their personal physician or midwife tells the, just letting you know what mine told me. Goodluck!

Have you tried a body pillow between your legs? Nice big pillow to rest your head on to keep your back aligne. some women also find it helpful to put some type of cushion under their hips.

Sometimes the weight of the uterus can put pressure on an artery and cut off oxygen, but it doesn't happen for everyone. If you get lightheaded after 20 minutes or pass out I would not suggest sleeping on your back. You can try propping yourself up with pillows to be slightly elevated.

Thanks to everyone for for the input!  I've tried using pillows between my legs, but most of the pain comes from my hips pressing into the mattress all night.  (Maybe we can just buy a new mattress.  Haha)  I'll definitely try sleeping on my back but propped up some.

I sometimes use a feather pillow under my hips when I lie on my side. It helps a bit.

There is a main vain under your baby slightly to the right, they tell you to avoid it so bub doesn't put pressure on it and cut blood and oxygen off. I know what you mean my hips are killing me to the point I want to cry!

In all three of my pregnancies I find myself sleeping on my back throughout the night. All my babies were fine. If your leg falls asleep from sleeping on your back then apparently that is when to be concerned, otherwise it's not likely you will actually cut off the vein that supplies the baby.
