concerned about stripping. good or bad?

I'm almost 40 weeks in a couple of days, and I have my appointment w the doctor and he would like to perform the stripping method. It sounds kinda routine, but I have read tht it has consequences for the baby and me, and tht it hurts. Don't have anyone to talk about it, so please tell ur outlook or experiences. Thanks for the help.

Daiminsmama it is like an internal examination as haydenava said, but the mw uses her finger to sweep across the cervix its suposed to help to bring on labour dosnt always work but its worth a try :-)

I'm not sure if that's exactly what my Dr was doing with my first pregnancy... she just said she was going to check me, to see if I was dilated at all (this was at 38 weeks). I had no idea what she meant but once she did it, it felt forceful for a second and then she was done. She told me I was dilated 3 cm already and I started contractions the next day. I can't complain and it seemed worth it to me. If you are nervous about it but still want to go through with it, I would just talk to your Dr and ask if she can make it quick? I didn't have it done with my 2nd pregnancy but she also came at 38 weeks on her own.
