vitamin b12 and folic acid deficiency

So my last blood test result showed I have a vitamin b12 and folic acid deficiency. I asked the doctor if I should just start taking the pregnancy pills again which have loads of b12 and folic acid, but she said no and instead ordered some more blood tests. Why can't I just start taking the vitamin pills again to get rid of the deficiency? And what is she hoping to find out in more blood tests? Any ideas?

I stopped taking prenatals because they made me really constipated I just couldn't take it anymore. Also thought that all the veg and fruits I'm eating would be enough, but obviously they weren't :-( thank you for the input ladies, I've started taking them again anyways and have a blood test next week, will let you know what the outcome is.

That is odd to me. I'm on prenatal and taking an extra 1000mg of b 12 because of dif.  My doc has always just put my on whatever vitamin I'm lacking and then get the test redone a few months later.
