Incompetent cervix concern

Sent by mymydavis Apr 05, 2009 04:32AM
Interested in getting a recommendation on a maternal fetal medicine specialist in Los Angeles. I am 21 wks. pregnant. I was diagnosed with short cervix 2.4 cm. I am experiencing slight contractions after receiving transvaginal ultrasound. I was given a turbuline shot. I feel like I am not getting enough support from my medical provider. I have not seen or spoken to him since my diagnosis, which was given by a perinatologist. I was told to follow up next week for another ultrasound. I feel like a sitting duck. I had to ask what should i do and then i was told not to lift anything heavy and keep my feet up as much as possible. I am not sure if that meant bed rest or not. I would not have gotten that advice had I not asked.  Am I overreacting. Does this diagnosis mean certain pre-term labor for me and how long do i have? What care should I seek. The perinatologist told me, cerclage may not work and the progesterone shots could cause birth defects. I am confused and scared.

Sorry to hear you are having preterm labor symptoms. I went through that with my son starting at 17 or 18 weeks and I know how scarry that can be.

Have they done an exam yet? Once a short cervix is detected they should start doing regular internal exams to check for dilation. If that starts then you can look forward to being put on the tributaline or some other type of labor stopping drug and bed rest for the remainder of your pregnancy.

Either way it's better that they caught it early. I ended up being dialated to almost 2cm by 20 weeks and went on serious bed rest, but still made it to 36 weeks without having to be put into the hospital. In my case it was too late to even try a cerlage by the time I got in to see my doc.

Until you can get in to see the doc I would stay off your feet as much as possible, try not to get stressed, drink lots of water, and just over all take it easy. This does not in any way mean certian pre-term labor, but your dr will want to keep an eye on it.
