Birth;
This is when they told us we would go to a OR like room with a better table with nicer stirrups. We agreed and were taken down the hall. This OR was newly renovated and looked amazing. 6 doctors/nurses followed us in as well as a new anesthetist. Another hour of pushing one doctor asked if we could use the hand operated vacuum. We were shown this little plastic disk with foam in the middle and a little hand pump. Pretty simple right? Not at all. Once installed, the arm that pulls on the suction disk actually came loose while the nurse was pulling, almost knocking her on her butt. This was scary but the force was sent up to Megan and we thought something happened to the baby. Turns out we were right. The next use resulted in birth! At this point, just as they were cutting the cord, I turned on my camcorder. I then got a glimpse of our baby’s head. A Hockey puck sized welt where the suction had damaged her head. It was totally superficial but it looked terrible. Luckily it wasn’t where her soft spot was. Refer to the pictures to see what I’m talking about. I’m glad we didn’t have a C-Section but if I had known the risks of vacuum I don’t know if I would opt for it again. They called birth at 6:53pm Wednesday February 11th. She weighed 8lbs 10oz and didn’t cry for the first 20 minutes. Everything else about her was perfect. She was a bit jaundice but nothing to be concerned about. I then spent the next 24 hours bottle feeding and changing Brooke because Megan was too exhausted and was very sick. People always ask how long it took me to learn all the dad stuff. I never learnt anything. I just did it. Because I had to.
Recovery;
Megan tore pretty bad, Level 2 tearing. It wasn’t horrible but bad enough that she was stitched for 30 minutes or so. I walked around the OR looking at what all the nurses were doing, went over to Brooke on the incubator/cleaning table to see if she was ok and she was. I ONCE glanced at Megan’s lower half. I’m glad I didn’t stare……………any longer and I would have been scarred for life. They didn't even give her anything for being stitched up, and she felt EVERYTHING. At this time I went to the waiting room and informed the family that we had our baby. I returned to the OR to see how things were going, this is when I got the see the placenta. I told myself I didn’t want to see it. Then when given the opportunity, It wasn’t gross at all. Everything looked extremely healthy with it. They bagged it up and froze it just in case there was any infection with Brooke. Once this was all done we were taken to our recovery room. It was private for about 5 hours until another mother was brought in. From this point on (until Friday) we were alone in our double bed room waiting to be discharged. I slept in the bed with Megan and Brooke slept in the hospital wheelie cart they give you.
