I have my 16 week appointment next Thursday and we will be getting to hear the heart beat for the first and we will be going over blood work for defects. I cannot wait. I saw the heart beating for the first scan, but I want to hear it so badly. My next ultrasound is not until 20 weeks. My DH and I just recently decided to find out what we are having, so of course now the suspense is killing me!!!! It sounds like all of you have had way more appointments than me, but like some of you had mentioned-every office is different.
I perfectly understand not getting addl testing. However the 2nd trimester labs check for a few addl genetic issues that the NT ones are unable to detect. Which is why I opted to go ahead and get them. I know in my heart things are fine but being in my mid 30's I would rather have that little bit of added reassurance.
About the second trimester labs: AFP is a protein secreted by the fetal liver and excreted in the mother's blood. It is generally used for detecting neural tube defects, but it can also indicate: abdominal wall defects esophageal and duodenal atresia, some renal and urinary tract anomalies turner syndrome, some low birth weight fetuses, and placental complications. A low level of AFP could also indicate Down Syndrome.
Hey, there!!
Things seem to be progressing fine for me. I'm 15 weeks today and I've gained about 2 lbs. My next OB appt is the first week of Sept., but I'm going to try to move it to the following so that DH can be there. ;)
I have my Level 2 u/s scheduled for 9/23 and I'm pretty excited about that one. We're not going to find out the sex of the baby, but I know that we're going to really get to see him/her at that appt. Since the NT results came back so positively, we aren't getting any more genetic testing/counseling and THAT is a wonderful feeling!
Status quo is a nice feeling right now, y'know!
JourneyJoJo...I do know that every doctor is different, but not seeing you at ALL until the 17th week doesn't sound quite right. Have you had any bloodwork done or anything? My first one was about 9 weeks and that's when they did my OB panel and tested things like iron, wbc, rbc, etc. They did an u/s to measure the baby and scheduled my other appts. (NT testing, etc.) I've had one every month since (so I've already seen my OB 3 times...well, the first time was at 7 weeks and was only with the tech to get a u/s, but then my first OB appt was at 9, my second at 13 and my next will be at 17)!
My actual first OB appt was 7 weeks when they did an u/s to check baby viability. Then another at 11 weeks then most recent at 14 weeks. I am sure every doctor is different. I would go nuts if I had to wait till 17 weeks tho. :)
My first OB appointment isn't until September 10. I'll be 17 weeks. Are they supposed to do a 14 week appointment? I had an NT scan at 12 weeks and go for my second set of NT bloodwork at 15 weeks to complete the NT screen.
I had my 14 week last Friday, it went well heart beat very strong. All my NT came back very good, I will not be doing any other additional testing because the NT was enough testing for me.
I have my other appointment in a month but my doc says it not the appointment for me to find out what I am having, the suspense is killing me although in my mind its a boy and I have my entire family calling him by his name.
I have my 12 week scan tomorrow and my 12 week ob on friday, so I will update then!
Glad to hear yours went well!!!
