Buying used baby stuff ????

What are your thoughts on buying used baby stuff off ebay/ craigslist?
I am not too comfortable in getting used items from the websites. I can MAYBE think of picking up a few things from friends but surely not clothes. I want to know how you ladies feel about this subject. Am I being too fussy? These are my first so it scares me to buy things from strangers not knowing what the history of that product might be.(KWIM)?
Definitely not fond of sharing clothes....
How do you say no to ppl who offer to sell of their old baby clothes?

Tarobinc, if the breast pump is a medela then don't worry about it. That is the only one I have found that has sealed components so that nothing can grow on the inside. You'll just want to buy new tubes and new cups. Otherwise do a little research and see if it has sealed components.

Rachie204, we also have a once upon a child consignment shop and they have great stuff.

A good friend of mine gave me her car seat/stroller, baby bath, baby swing, breat pump, and a baby bjorn carrier.  If I have a girl, she'll be supplying me with some clothes.  I have no problem using these items from her (except maybe the breast pump after reading the above).  I know the car seat is fine as well as the other items.  It just means I can register for a few more items that I might not have, like the second stage car seat and an umbrella stroller.

A good wipe down with a strong cleaner  diluted with water will do the trick.  I agree, I would not buy a used mattress.  That is best to buy brand new.  And a used crib is ok if you can verify that is up to date on the current crib safety regulations.

I personally have no problem buying most stuff used.  Bottles and stuff like that I won't but clothes are usually ok.  I live in Arkansas and we have a huge consignment sale twice a year in Little Rock called Duck Duck Goose.  Consigners from all over the state bring clothes, toys, furniture, strollers...just about anything.  They are picky about what they take to sell so pretty much everything is in good condition.

I cone feel comfortable with used clothes or toys. The only things I would buy used would be furniture items, like a dresser, bookcase, etc. because those can easily be cleaned up. I am currently trying to find a used rocker to buy because I want to reupholster the cushions with my own fabric choice.

Go for it. I have been. There are only certain things you don't buy used. On my list of no-nos are the crib mattress, breast pumps, and car seats. These are much better bought new. A crib can take on the shape of the baby there previously and you want the best support you can get. Breast pumps, well, let's put it this way. I was reading reports about the best and worst. Some pumps do not have sealed valves on the inside which means you can have growing bacteria or milk still in the machine. Which means anything the previous mother had you can pass onto baby. Yuck! As for car seats, a car seat should be replace after a car accident, regardless of whether it looks damaged or not, and since you may never know if it was or not it is best just to buy new. Anything else, feel free to buy used. I have purchased bedding for my crib, clothes, etc. This way and have never had any problems. I am an avid ebayer, but haven't really gotten anything on craig's list. I also buy from baby consignment shops. You can usually find a really good deal on clothes that have been barely worn and sometimes clothes with the tags still on them for alot less than buying new. Clothes and other items can be easily washed and sanitized. Used toys in good shape can be cleaned in warm soap and water and then sprayed with disinfectant.
