weight gain & what my OB said to me.....

okay so before i was pregnant i was trying to lose some weight, until i found out i was preg at 135 lbs. Now, I gained 35 and I went in yesterday for prenatal checkup and the Ob doc says watch it!!! He said I could get toxemia and that i dont wnat a c-section so drink lots of water and whatever you've been doing, stop (late snacking or eating unhealthy w/e) He also said the MAX should be 40lbs im already at 35...........and they say you gain 1 pound a week now.....I really really reallllllly dont want a c section......I ordered a prenatal yoga dvd online, going to go pick it up at the po today......but im just so nervous now....im going to be strict now about just watchingg proportions and drinking water......but what if that doesnt work!!!

the OB office has 5 doctors, this is the FIRST time ive seen this doc, and he was SOO upfront, which I'm thankful for, because none  of the other doctors told me the dangers of gaining too much.....but I feel like they should have told me this sooner....I know I should watch what I eat, but I didnt know about toxemia....

my fiances boss wife blood pressure went up and she passed out after giving birth it was serious, i think she gained too much too........

******I dont want to lose any weight, I just dont want to put anymore on, is that even possible at this point???*****

i'm sorry to hear that it has been so tough. My nausea started up again about 4 days ago (32 weeks) but lucky for me- I don't vomit.

Maybe you'll have more luck if you eat a few bites every 1/2 hour instead of a big meal? I don't know if that will work for you, but that was what we did for my sister when she had anorexia. She had got to the stage where she ate so little so rarely that as soon as she tried to eat anything she would either vomit, have diarrhoea or both.

Are you able to sip juice? I'm sure that would help if you can manage. I find that soup yoghurt and juice work well for me because when I'm really feeling unwell chewing makes my nausea worse...

Hope you improve soon! xx

thanks hon I've been trying...the doctor says I have a version of hyperemesis gravidarium that doesn't result in vomiting but that destroys your appetite. Unfortunately there's no medication to increase the appetite that I can take safely...so he told me just to do my best. they've been doing lots of bloodwork to make sure I've got all the proper nutrients, and the baby SEEMS to be growing well (I get a growth u/s with the MFM today) so hopefully it's gonna work out...but it's been worrying me, and it's VERY frustrating. last night I managed to eat a nice big dinner (it took about 45 minutes) of turkey with ginger and plain white rice...yep, all came back up. sigh. oh well, hoping for the best today...thanks for your advice :)

Yes, you should definitely never go more than 4 hours during  the day without eating. You don't need to eat a whole meal. Try eating-

a carrot or
a small handful of nuts or
a small tub of yoghurt
or a piece of peanut butter bread/toast or
a piece of fruit or
a fruit smoothie.

If you don't have anything in your stomach then there isn't anything for your baby to take. Even a few bites of something is better than nothing (if you are feeling sick). Babies eat 2-4 hourly once they come out and eating regularly when you are pregnant will give your baby the best chance at being strong, healthy and getting everything that it needs to mature.

The key to doing it right is small, frequent, healthy meals. Try it for a few days and you should start feeling better. The other advantage is that small frequent meals also reduce heartburn.

I set myself a schedule to make it easier. I eat at-

8am- breakfast
10am- small snack
12.30pm- lunch
3pm- snack
5.30-6pm - dinner
8pm - snack

Keep in mind that my lunch and dinner are much smaller servings than usual.

well with my daughter she sat so high that she was pushing on my stomach and I could only eat little meals but I ate like 10 of them a day..with this one he's sitting a LOT lower. the thing is...if I didn't have to feed my daughter I could go the entire day and not even think about eating. i just have no appetite. I've already been lectured by my doctor and they threatened to put me on an Ensure diet if I didn't stop losing weight (it's been dropping pretty steadily the whole pregnancy) but I just seriously can't remember to eat. when I feed my daughter I give myself something to eat but sometimes even then I can't convince myself that anything sounds good...and in the last few nights the throwing up has come back. like yesterday all day I had a lunch-boxed side box of orange juice, 2 cokes, some french fries from macdonalds and....I think that was it? Oh a couple glasses of water and some ice, lol. All day!! And I wasn't the slightest bit hungry...

it's actually incredibly frustrating. i'm glad I don't have to worry about weight gain (i was terrified I would gain a bunch of weight this time...i didn't with my daughter, but I know a lot of women who have one good pregnancy and then one really bad pregnancy when it comes to weight, so I was nervous) but at the same time I'm so WEAK and exhausted all the time because the baby takes every single calorie that I eat so there's no calories to burn for energy.

The doc just said to double my calories but even thinking of that makes me completely nauseous...idk but it's frustrating.

I totally get the nausea thing....and not really wanting to eat and stuff....as long as your tummy is satisfied I wouldn't worry about it, have you talked to the doc about that? Everyone is different, I think as long as your eating healthy meals atleast 3 times a day your good. When she said 4hours...if you think about it, lets say you got up at 8 am (breakfast), then 12pm would be lunch time, 4 hours later would be 4pm which could be snack and then dinner at what 6pm? and if your hungry again (or not) at 7 or so another snack if hungry........then bed time.......I wouldn't go crazy with the timing, like I said 3 healthy meals a snack in between if your hungry ......

really?? every 4 hours?? I feel awful now...my appetite has been so non-existant and my nausea has been so bad that I'm really not eating all that often...maybe something in the morning and something in the evening with a snack somewhere in between...baby's still growing and moving but now I wonder if I've been eating enough...I've been losing weight the whole pregnancy but if Grey's still growing..?

But I would agree that the best thing to do would be to substitute healthy snacks for unhealthy ones but to continue to eat when you're hungry :)

Oh, I definately dont want to diet, I know my baby needs all the nutrients he can get...just the way my doc said it kinda made me worry a lil... I just wanted to know is it possible beyond this point not to gain much more..... I eat pretty good, aside from the cravings, and I walk atleast 10min a day to take the dog out, so I do get my excercise, but in the beginning I wasnt really watching what I ate or how much......Now, I'm going to make it a point to eat healthy and not eat as much!

I have had 3 babies so far (pregnant with the 4th). Two of them I had pre ecclampsia and gained 73 pounds and 77 pounds. Excessive weight gain is actually a symptom of pre ecclampsia and not a cause.
The third one I had no complications and only gained 24 pounds.

ALL of my babies were vaginal births.

I really think that you should talk to some other doctors because I think that yours is stressing you out unnecessarily. I know plenty of women who had put on a large amount of weight and still had vaginal births.

If I were you I would concentrate on making sure that your baby is supplied with all the nutrients that it needs to grow healthily instead of trying to put yourself on a diet. You should never go more than 4 hours without snacking during the day.

It's possible - don't diet, just eat smaller meals. With my first I gained 33 lbs by 38 weeks and then lost 3 lbs in the last 3 weeks (she was 1 week overdue) not on purpose but because my stomach was so squished I had to eat small meals.  A lot of women stop gaining weight or lose weight in the last couple weeks because the baby gets so large there is no room for food. Just make sure the small meals are healthy :)
