upset from OB appointment

Well I thought thins were going good and got a differnent approch from the dr today. I have been waiting to see him for two months as he is the only OB in the practice. The rest are NP and one midwife. So anyway we went over my history. 4 premature babies!! So he said there was no way I would go full term and that the progesterone I am taking has no effect on me after 14 weeks! I mean really it stops my contractions whenever I have them, but he said "It doesn't hurt to keep taking it" so I can. So that made me feel like it is all in my head. I know that some dr's say it helps even though there have been no studies and some say it doesn't. At least he is letting me keep taking it I guess. SO I got a cervical us done and he said I would every visit from here on out. My cervix is still good but has changed and is soft now. (20 weeks along Wednesday) He said when I go  I will go fast. Anyway I have never had trouble with my cervix changing before and it is still long! So I don't know how he can even say that! I had PROM with my last three. So I am a little upset that he was not incouraging at all. He said he will start shots to develope the babies lungs starting at 26 weeks. I will get two a week 24 hours apart every week till 34 weeks I guess.

So don't you think he could be wrong? I coulmake it full term I think and have no bad intuition about this one!

I was on the pill, prometrium and the progesterone cream, the suppositoires are the same if you can get a high enough dose. The shot is P17 and I am gettting 250mg dose a week. I was told that the shot is just so you do not ahve to take toher things daily and it is in an oil so it is slow released. Also it is just a higher dose of the other ones. Except I called my high risk dr today becasue I ahve had contractions since getting the shot. I found out that I am getting 250mg a week now of pregesterone intedad of my around 1000mg! he will be upping my shot to 1400 dose instead. You know I had 4 premature babies and the last three were due to PROM> I had contractions but not had dialated. I was told by the high risk dr that my water had ruptured from getting manual checks as it puts pressure on the cervix and changes the flora of the area unlike a us which does nto have to even touch the cervix. I woudl NOT let them check you manually at all! March of Dimes says that is a leading casue of infection and premature rupture of membranes and  premature cervical dialation. The American Accadamy of Obstetrics also has some articles on it of how it has been found to casue harm to the cervix and make incompitent cervix worse. You might want to talk with your OB about that. That scares me after you said that!

Yeah I have printed out many studies that were posted on the March of Dimes web site and the American Accadamy of Obstetrics to give him when I go back. I do not think her will like it though but he deserves it after making me feel lik eit was in my head! THat is the week I give him my birth plan also so I hope he signs it and there are no problems!!

I am wondering if he is referring to the progesterone that RE doctors give you to help keep a pregnancy in the first 3 months - that is different than the shots they give at 17 or 18 weeks to 35 to 37 weeks.. I was on the ones in the begining and I am on the shots now started them at 17 weeks.... the suppository ones that I was taking does not help later in pregnancy but the one I started helps with preterm labor... I will get the name for you tonight when I go to the Dr and post it tonight or tomorrow then you can research yourself and maybe educate him!!! And for the cervix - just keep getting it checked as much as possible.. my high risk drs check it every other week via vaginal u/s and my ob checks it the weeks I donot have the u/s manually.... as long as it stays above 2.5cm and closed w.o funneling you should be fine... if not bedrest is what made my daughter last until 32 weeks.. best of luck!!

I always have a hard time dealing with the male OB that I have to see once in a while.  He's sounds very similiar to this dr.  I primarily see a midwife, and she is amazing...wish you had had a better visit!  It stinks when they discourage us like that!

Exactly! Lol, but I think it is better from a medical stand point to be safe rather than sorry. Especially where a baby is concerned. I hope you make it as far along as you would like to, and there really was no need for the doctor to be so..how he was. I guess its probably hard being the only OB in an office. I bet he always wanted to be wanted by women...I think he probably got his wish lol.

Yeah my goal is 36-37 weeks and this being from the beging. I am sure I will not go full term or over but you are right! You know it just seems like dr's would be more considerate to how you will react and feel! I wish I could go to a midwife as I thought I would before I got pregnant but I got the bleed at 5 weeks that lasted for 2 and scratched that.

You know that is the big thing that I ahve not gone into labor and have not had contractions since I got a higher dose of the progesterone. I really think I will do good this time and I guess I will have to prove him wrong:)

Of course he could be wrong...I've discovered in OB medicine that they're usually giving you worst case scenario just because they don't want to be wrong in a bad way...much better to be wrong in a good way. Hang in there and just do what you've been doing. Of course you know that with 4 preemies you're likely to deliver early, but there's no reason you can't make it to nearly full term, so don't even stress about it. Some women's cervix will thin out and soften early, and as long as they know what's going on they can most likely keep you from going into full-blown labor if you're being sensitive to your body...

I wouldn't worry too much, I know it's hard or rather impossible not to...but keep happy thoughts <3.
