First Year Transitions & Changes

Has any one phased formula out completely yet?
Cut out the nighttime feedings/bottle?
Transitioned to whole milk?

We have not given up in the bottles yet, but I have the Bourn Free where you can change the nipples to sippy cup spouts, so I will give that a go for at least two bottles a day.

Also - Hayden us not a fan of whole milk. I guess I will just start adding some to each of her bottles and then slowly transition to full milk. Anyone else doing this or had success w/. the transition to whole milk?

We still do 4 bottles a day - but I would like to start dropping 1 or 2.

I am also still feeding her pureed food, and I am ready to start phasing this out too, but she is such a picky eater!! Any tips?

I guess once we get all of this food business taken care of we can think about potty training...haha

Hey Jem...

We have phased out her afternoon bottle with no issues at all.  We just took away the bottle and replaced it with a sippy cup full of whole milk.  She does great with the Playtex sippy cup with a straw on it.  I found these soooo much easier for her to drink her milk from because she is still sucking like she would for a bottle, but without the association of a bottle.  Leighton was also not a fan of the milk, but by the 3 or 4th day she realized that there wasn't going to be a botte so if she wanted to "eat" that is what was being served.

I am not sure what your pediatrician has recommended, but our pediatrician pretty much follows the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations.  They say not to give milk or juice from a bottle, only from a sippy cup especially when you are transitioning.  That way they only associate milk & juice the the sippy.

Leighotn has been off of pureed food for probably 1 1/2 months or so.  I literally just stopped giving it to her and only put down chopped up food for her to eat.  Like the milk, the first few days she didn't really eat much but by the 4th day or so I think she realized that this is how her food was now going to be.  So, I make her tuna sandwiches or turkey sandwiches and cut them into long "sticks" and she takes bites out of them.  Same for bananas.  I take half of a banana and just put her down on her tray and she picks it up and takes bites from it.

As for night time feedings, she hasn't had any night feedings since she was probably 4 or 5 months.  That is about it for our 1st year transitions.  Looking back it really makes me realize how much these babies have to learn just to "fit in" that 1st year.  INcredible!  Bring on year 2 ;)

Those are good tips! I have been holding off on the "big transition" until she is 1. Not too much longer...!!!! I still worry about her choking!! :( She eats kids meals when we go out to eat but I only order her foods that are mushy. Like ravioli, spaghetti, mac and cheese, grilled cheese, etc. I need to get braver and try new ideas.

How do you do veggies?

Phin has been dropping day nursings pretty quickly (sad momma) but we still get up around 2am for a nurse and snuggle. I will do that as long as he wants really. He loves his sippy cup though. We haven't gone over to milk yet just water and watered down juices. The only puree he gets still is prunes as it might be his favorite food....next to black beans that is.

good point on the sippy cup Ovaz....I have only given her milk in a cup and formula in a bottle without knowing that was recommended, so good news there. so you completely dropped formula?

OK, I am finishing the purees and then will move on.

To second Amy's question - how do you do veggies? Frozen veggies warmed up in bite size?

As Mark's first birthday approaches I am getting more and more excited to introduce whole milk. I love nursing, but am excited to have more free time as Mark feeds himself from a sippy. We have several different sippy cups, but Mark seems to like the Born free kind (they have a squishy top) and the Nuby kind best.
We haven't fed Mark pureed food for months. Amy & Jem, I like to either buy frozen veggies from the store or once a week I cut and cook up a bunch & freeze them. Then I serve warm as needed. That way I feel like he is getting more of a variety. Also, Jem, I like to mix the veggies, for example cauliflower w/broccoli, sweet potatoes and carrots. That way he at least sees the veggies he doesn't like with the ones he does.
Sleeping..... well I am super embarrassed to admit that Mark still gets up 2-3 times a night to nurse. His room is directly across from ours and doesn't have a door so crying it out during the day isn't an option.

We have just started giving Mady on sippy a day of whole milk.  She gets formula in a sippy at brakfast and lunch.  She does have a bottle of it her and there but, now I am going to vow not to use the bottle anymore.  No point in it.  Oh yeah and we nurse when she wants, which lately has been a lot.  But only for a minute or two.

We do not give Mady any pureed foods anymore, she eats what we eat, just in bite size.  I also just started giving it to her that way she actually prefers it bite size.  She wont let us feed her anymore.   Veggies I just warm them up and cut them if needed.

Alright.... well apparently my REALLY long explanation of what we how I do veggies didn't get send through last night :(  Gotta love the internet!

Like Whitney, the frozen mixed veggies are super convenient (since they are already in bite sized pieces) so I just warm up 1/4 cup of those and put them on her tray.  They sell a billion and one different types... I pretty much buy frozen stuff (same nutrients and really convenient!)... that goes for fruit too.  Obviously things are out of season so it is cheaper to buy frozen things like strawberries, mango, blueberries, raspberries, etc.  If you haven't tried mashed cauliflower yet (seriously, it is really yummy!) you should.  John and I eat it instead of mashed potatoes... so that is one "pureed" thing that she will still get.  But, it isn't made especially for her.

My next venture it veggie land is to steam a whole baby carrot and give that to her to bite from.  I suppose she is ready for it now, I just haven't done it.  Jem... Leighton has 4 teeth that are completely through (center top & bottom) and then another bottom one that is poking through (although I am not sure how much help that thing is though!).  So, even with 4 teeth she does great with biting and chewing.  Don't be worried about choking ;)  I was right there with you not so long ago!

We too have almost phased out the pureed foods. I still puree apples and pears to add to Jack's cereal in the morning. Other than that we are strictly on to finger foods. I do have about a dozen jars in the cupboars that I keep on hand for when we travel or those horribly lazy days. I also give him a spoon once in a while to practice with but it seems like a lost cause right now. We do a ton of the frozen veggies. I like the mixed veggies and peas. We have about 1/2 cup each night for dinner. they are SO easy. I never even thought about frozen fruit too. I will have to check it out on my next shopping trip.

As for bottles...We completely phased those out about 3 weeks ago. Jack never even put up a fight. I give him three 7oz cups a day. He has a big 10oz cup with a straw of water sitting on our coffee table all day to drink from in between meals. Of the 3 cups we only do the middle of the day cup of whole milk, the rest is still formula. We have 1.5 cans left of formula so I am trying to use it up before the final switch. I think after his birthday I will switch his morning formula cup with milk. So far so good with the switch.
