Would you be concerned if it were your child?

Leighton had her 12 mo. check up last week and she is healthy... but she hasn't gained any height since her 9 mo. check up.  She weighs 19 lbs. 14 oz (which he says is the 75th percentile... which she has always been for weight & height) but as far as her height she is still 28 in. (which is the 25th percentile).  He said that he was going to keep an eye on her height since she all of a sudden dropped and isn't following her typical height to weight ratio.

I am concerned becasue thyroid disorders run in my family and mine wasn't caught until it had permenantly affected my growth (thus, I am 5 foot... which I love by the way! ;).  I just want to make sure that this doesn't happen to Leighton.  I didn't speak up at the appt. and now in hind sight I think "Hmm... this doesn't seem right?"

I made an appt. to discuss my concerns with her pediatrician tomorrow.  Am I totally over reacting or do you think I am spot on with my concern?  And, those of you who have already taken your little ones in for their 12 mo. check up, did your kids grow?  This is crazy!

Alright Ladies...

Took her in today and she is fine.  She measured 28 3/4 inches toay... when last week she measured 28 in (which is how long she was in Dec. for her 9 mo. check up).  So, basically the nurse did't accurately measure her last week... GRRR!  But, he did say my concern was ligit b/c of my condition and how it runs in the family.  I was a little embarrassed, but they should measure these kiddos more accurately!  haha

So, $25 later... we know that she is growing :)  He said she is 50th percentile for height and 25th percentile for weight.  (which is strange b/c las week he said she was 75th for weight and I thought that had to have been off!  lol)  All is good now :)

I think it is good you are going back in to talk to her doc. If your instincts tell you something might be off and to push for more answers then there is nothing wrong with that. I wish i would have done more when Jack was an infant. He would scream all day and all I would get was that "babies cry" or "maybe he has colic". I knew deep down there was something going on. Looking back I think I had a very hungry child on my hands. I was told to only feed him every 3 hours and so I did it (what did I know about babies?). I wanted to feed him more but I was so afraid with everything I read about formula babies being overweight and stuff. I should have shevled all that "advise" and went with my own instincts. The docs never thought it was a feeding issue since he was gaining weight. Looking back I can see how strong the motherly instinct is...follow your heart till all your questions are answered.

I am sure things are fine but it is always good to settle the mind. Keep us posted. btw this just came to mind...pediatricians see tons of kids and parents a day so after a while they may start to get immune to the "questioning" parent and if it's not a text book issue then they may be quick to dismiss. Keep pressing any issue, that is why they make the big bucks.

I haven't taken Jack in for his appointment yet so I am not sure where he stands.

Blake grew taller but didn't gain too much more weight, so yeah I might be concerned. Not freaked out or anything but it wouldn't hurt to bring up your concerns. Our pediatrician thought that I wouldn't want Blake to have a blood test for something because she thought there wasn't much of a risk and I wouldn't want to subject her to unneccessary pain. Which is TRUE but at the same time if there is a chance there is something wrong I am ok with Blake getting her blood draw even if it hurts for a minute.

Btw, Blake's thing turned out to be nothing at all and I am sure Leighton's will be nothing too! Better to check though, especially with a family history.

Micah weighed 15 lbs when he was one, and my friends son was the same. Some children are just small, and I would imagine that because you are small Leighton is going to be the same. I wouldn't be overly concerned with that. Like I said before, it couldn't hurt getting her checked.

In my heart I feel that I am doing the right thing, but then it's like "Well, wouldn't he have said something if he was REALLY concerned?  Or ran tests?"

I have learned (the hard way) that doctors don't always know best... I too was tossed aside when I was a teenager and was misdiagnosed for years before MY MOM figured out what was wrong.  So, I know that I am her best advocate.

Do you think it is suspicous though that she hasn't grown in 3 months?  I am getting a little worried :/

I think you are right to be concerned... you will never regret taking those extra steps. We fought to get Micah's diagnosis (PDD- NOS) until he was 2, and went through MANY doctors who made me feel like I was over reacting, well come to find out there really was something wrong. So, as you are aware, you are her best advocate!
