Naps/Self-Soothing

Okay, so we're having some problems with length of naps and self-soothing.  So, I am wondering what everyone is doing and what things are/aren't working.  Are you using mobiles/musical items in order to soothe?  Are you putting babies in asleep or awake?  Brock is being rocked to sleep completely and waking up after about 30-40 min. for naps during the day, but he sleeps 9 hours through the night.  I've tried to put him in the crib when he's drowsy and not completely asleep, but that hasn't worked.  I've let him cry for a few minutes, but everything I've read says to not let them cry.  When he wakes up from naps during the day he is still crabby and naps again within an hour.  So, how many naps are your babies taking and how long?  I know all  babies are different, but I need some kind of advice for some sanity!  He just seems crabby all the time!

Ovaz told me to dip the binky in 1tsp of light corn syrup and 1 tsp of water mixed together then try it.  Well she takes it now we are working on keeping it in her mouth but she no longer freaks and gags on it, worth a try!!!

Noah will nap on an off during the day but its only about 30-40 min naps.... and he normally just falls asleep in the car or after a bottle... my son DOES NOT self sooth.... he is just a fussy baby.... at night I feed him the bottle and he will normally fall asleep eating, I will burp him and put him in his crib and he will normally be out for 4-5 hours... I have tried laying him there to fall asleep and it doesnt work for me... he will just fuss and fuss then eventually wake himself fully awake with his crying...Noah refuses to take a binky too... so its just rocking right now that gets him to sleep.... I would LOVE if my son would self soothe!!!

We have to take the mobile out of the crib during the day (when his room is light) because if he wakes up at all and sees it he won't go back to sleep. Naps last anywhere from 30- 1hr. 2hours if we are cuddling on the couch. I have started putting him in the crib just before he is about to fall asleep
we are still struggling at night. He is fine until his feeding at about 2am, then he goes back down but within an hour is fussing and he has to come into bed with us or one of us in the spare room, but he is now skipping that feeding (5amish) which is good cause he is always awake at 7 adn then feeds every 2 hours all morning

Jules,

Blake started this about 6 weeks but we have been pretty casual with her from the beginning. I really don't stress the naps too much because she takes them when she needs them. Sometimes I can tell she is sleepy because she is super fussy but she will fall asleep in her vibrating chair or if she is on a blanket in the living room she will just fall asleep wherever she is.

TV has helped a lot to be honest. The best way for Blake to take a nap (when she is super fussy) is to put her in her vibrating chair in front of the tv. I put it on Noggin (which is a television channel) and turn the volume down pretty low so it isn't blaring then I will turn it waaay down after she falls asleep. She really doesn't do that too often..I try to use tv sparingly but sometimes if she is  fussy and I know she is tired but don't know what to do with her.. that's the only thing that will work. That stinks your baby doesn't take a binky...they have been life savers for us...it soothes her before she gets all worked up too. But anyways, I would recommend the chair/tv combo...it works for us.

Oh, Toes...

I forgot to also tell you that from what I read, mobiles shouldn't be used when trying to get the baby to sleep.  It will act as a stimulant, and the environment that you create should be dark and quiet for the best sleep.  We use her mobile once she wakes up from her nap.  She loves watching it go round and round :)

The self soothing thing comes and goes with Leighton.  Sometimes she can do it (I don't let her fuss for more than maybe a minute or two) and other times she can't.  If she goes any longer than a minute or two, she will completely wake herself up and become hystarical, so it is better to catch it before it gets out of control.  When she begins fussing, we also put a pacifier in her mouth.  That does it... she stops fussing and goes right to sleep.

As for the naps and night time sleep specifics...  She sleeps in her crib for naps and night time sleep.

NAP 1 (MORNING NAP)  She sleeps anywhere from 40 min- 2hours for her morning nap.  We just put her in her sleep sack while she is still awake, put the pacifier in, and walk out of the room without saying anything to her.

NAP 2 (AFTERNOON NAP) Same routine for her afternoon nap.  The afternoon nap is usually a bit longer.  We are guaranteed an hour and sometimes 2 or 2 1/2 hours.

NAP 3 (LATE AFTERNOON NAP)  This is an unplanned event :)  She usually will crash anywhere from her play mat, to the car seat if we are out, to the swing.  This nap usually lasts only 20-30 min.

BEDTIME Night time, put her in her sleep sack, give her a bottle in the rocking chair, put the pacifier in once she is done with the bottle.  By that time, she is realllllly sleepy.  So, she gets put in her crib either completely asleep or almost asleep.  If she fusses, I walk in to her room and simply put the pacifier back in and walk out.

Amy-
How did you get that all to happen.  At night time I rock Mady to sleep after nursing her, then put her i her crib in her swaddle.  I try to nap her every 2 hours as the healthy sleep habits, happy child book says but I am with toes she sleeps only 30-40 minutes. Mady will not take a binki so that wont work for us, but I want her to take 2 long naps, when did Blake start this routine?

Ok this is what we do...

For night time sleeping Blake is still in the bassinet in our room. (She probably will be until my husband forces her out..haha) I never ever put her in it unless it is time for 10-7 sleep. So I figure that way she knows what being put there means...sleepy time! Anyways, at night time it is different than nap time. Nap time is just where ever she happens to fall asleep..usually her vibrating chair or car seat if we are out. At night time I swaddle her (arms tucked in) with one of those kiddopolus swaddles. I lay her down when she is still awake and put a binky in her mouth with the lights turned down low (I like to read in bed so it can't be pitch black) and she just goes to sleep within a few minutes. Sometimes she kicks around in her swaddle but I never mess with her so she goes to sleep.

I don't rock her or anything. I never push her to nap though it just kind of happens. Some day she sleep more than others. Usually she has two major naps during the day that last about an hour and 1/2 to two hours with smaller cat naps whenever she falls asleep doing whatever.
