From my understanding u can dilate before ur cervix effaces. They say first time mom's usually efface first but women who have had babies usually dilate first

From what I was told that means your cervix is still kind of high up. Too high to deliver right now but your close. It can move down and open at any time

If I were you I definitely wouldn't wait for contractions to be 3-5 mins apart to go to the hospital even if the roads aren't bad just because you're kind of far. Just call the hospital when you're having contractions and tell them how far you live and they should tell you when to come in

You can dilate I believe 1cm without your cervix softening because I was 1cm for 5 weeks and now today I got checked and I'm 37 weeks 5 days and in 2 1/2 cm dilated but its a good thing it means baby is almost here and your body is soon going to start the first stage of labor and if he wasn't sure why didn't he have someone else check for him

That's what I don't understand my doctor was a mid wife but she could have had someone check. I'm just worried because we have 7 inches of snow and I'm scared I could go into labor and not have away too hospital.

Cervix being soft is a good thing! That means your getting closer! :) I'm not 100% sure but I don't think you can start dilating until your cervix gets softened.. as for him not being able to tell because his fingers are not long enough I would think he would have someone else try to check that's what they've done for me if one person can't tell.
