Weight scares!

Ok, so my husband has been extremely nervous about my health and gaining weight lately. I'm a small person and have yet to hit over 100 lbs. I'm 21 weeks and started out at 98 lbs when I first found out I was pregnant. Any suggestions on how to gain more weight?

Yes, so far I'm just under.  I measure a little smaller than the average.

Hi Nora, don't worry too much. I was the same way and started gaining weight till I was 26 wks. So far I've gained 14 lbs and I am due in 2 wks. Dr. Said that as long as the belly measures correctly,I shouldn't worry. Ask the dr. If your belly measures correctly.

Yes, I've set meals at 5 or 6 times a day and consistently snacking, but I've gained weight then lost it. And my doctor fears it might be dangerous and says it could be a complicated pregnancy if I don't gain any extra weight.

Eat more?  :-)  Does your doctor say you need to gain weight?  You can always add more snacks to your day and continue to eat regular size meals.  Cook with more healthy oils, like olive oil.  Snack on nuts, which are healthy but higher in calories. Drink whole milk instead of reduced fat.  Snack on cheese.  Avoid just adding junk calories though from sodas, candy, ice cream... Things like that.

...So what I'm saying is even if you don't gain that much weight you shouldn't worry.

For the first trimester you don't need to gain weight since baby doesn't need much. But I suggest frequent meals, of course healthy. Aim for 4-6 meals a day. For the second trimester you'll probably need 200-300 extra calories since you started out small. And for the third aim for 300-400 extra. Since you were underweight aim to gain at least 30 lbs. But up to 45 is fine. Other than that you can't do much, it's better to gain weight being healthy than gain weight being unhealthy.
